José Tomás, one of Spain's most famous matadors, has been "severely gored" by a bull and is in a critical condition. Some strange fashion choices evident in the photo at the top of the story...
This doesn't seem very fair, why wasn't the bull granted the privilege of performing, wikipedia informs me, a tercio de muerte on the matador?
Good question. I also think that if the bull manages to kill the the bullfighter, one of the matador's ears should be cut off and be given to the bull.

From that Guardian report; so the ear thing is not needed. I'm guessing he suffered a fair bit.

Quote

"They were calling for blood, which was deeply worrying," said eyewitness Luis Lozano. "The trail of blood between the spot where he was gored and the infirmary was frightening. I could see his father weeping."

The newspaper El País said Tomás's injury was so serious that the bullring doctors who first operated on him did not have time to anaesthetise him.

Maryport is a disappointment for which there is no cure, but the annual Deathrace thread hereabouts provides welcome distraction.

Dr Rudi Vis MP, 69, who will not be seeking re-election, has been diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Aretha Franklin has canceled her New Orleans Jazz Fest performance. This is serious stuff around here... you don't just "drop out" of Jazz Fest without a good reason. http://www.wafb.com/....asp?S=12404492

Lady Jakobovits, a big cheese in Britain's Jewry, is seriously ill.

(Actually, cancel that. She'd already been dead for three days when I made that post.)

Given that diagnosis what's he doing on this thread?

Ideas and possibilities for August might just about be fair for him.

Science fiction author Norman Spinrad....

Quote

I’ve been following Norman’s updates since I landed in Miami, and his condition seems to be worsening; he is set to undergo serious procedures Thursday to remove a tumor blocking his intestine and keeping him from being able to ingest food. As of his update yesterday morning, his surgeon tells him the proposed procedure has a 60/40 rate of success.

Lianne Smith has - apparently - attempted suicide, Martin Smith is threatening the same and their kids are murdered. This is too depressing for words. I mean, both parents could end it in a blaze of publicity within weeks and none of us has a hope in hell of bagging them on a favoured dead pool. CP, are you there, any chance you might - like - reconsider your retirement?
