well done whoever brought this one up... i know bugger all about buster's state of health, but i can fill in a few details on some others mentioned. capt sensible is healthy physically, but a man who insists on playing all five parts (and 20-odd minutes) of the groundhogs 'split' for a soundcheck might be worth a look from a psychiatrist. charlie harper had a heart attack about ten years ago, still has a huge gut, and sometimes lets the subs play a quick instrumental so he can have a breather. but he seems in better nick than he was a few years back, actually, and the only thing that'll finish him off early is that psychotic japanese bird he's got. tv smith is incredibly well and will probably outlive the lot of us. he's still with gaye (sigh) who is lovelier than ever, and instead of drugs he has tropical fish (which he's an expert at masturbating, apparently). still only got one tune for all those lyrics, but if you like it...

 

which one out of the rezillos were you referring to? the original drummer also played with the pork dukes a few years back (imagine a fat capt sensible, uncle fester, the son of one of them, and a scottish bloke. lovely). he seemed to like the nose candy, so i'd hedge me bets. the others? anyone know?

i did hear a nasty rumour recently that mark perry of alternative tv has got lukeimia, which i hope is not true as he's just become a dad again. i've got a mate, etc, so i'll try and find out.

Blimey Pulphack - the Groundhogs.

 

I was a proud owner of Split (a concept album with a rather vague concept). Top of the Pops introduced a 'progressive album' spot (Prog is a more recent term applied to the ELP types) in about 1971 and The Gs appeared doing Cherry Red in headphones looking very serious. I later saw them live in Barnstaple while on holiday. The legendary T S McPhee is still playing. Sad bastard that I am I googled him last year. Ifanyone asks what this free association has to do with DL, its that it confirms that TS McPhee is still eligible for the list. Will that do?

 

Don't I remember Buster B, sport that he is, being rather amused that he was mentioned in DL last year.

ooh, quite a lot to deal with here... firstly, i was looking at that rezillos site earlier, atj, and i do hear (from a mate whose judgement on these matters is to be trusted) that they're rather good still, so definitely recommended as a night out. i don't think the guy in the pork dukes was angel patterson, though - not unless he's had plastic surgery. if you google the rezillos (as you obviously did) there's some stuff by earlier members who didn't get to record with them. i think he's in there, but i didn't catch the buggers name between snorts (him, not me).

 

pooka - despite my suspicion that sensible needs his head looking at for doing split, it is a damn fine album, although my fave 'hogs is hogwash. it's a crying shame the rev ts mcphee has given up electric gigs because of the hearing. i have massive respect for him as he had a stroke at the turn of the nineties, and as i undertsand it basically had to relearn to play guitar from scratch. he was out on the road in about 18 months. diamond geezer. however, you've got to reckon that a hard-living blueser who's 62 this year and has already had a stroke is skating on the clear ice. incidentally, i agree with you - progressive is about bands who tried to be unique at the time, whereas prog is really a generic term for that yes/elp/genesis brand of art rock. but that's another matter.

 

masturbating fish. no big mystery - he talked about it at great length when he played the 12 bar club a while back. apparently you have to do this to get the little buggers to spawn in ponds, and it involves someting that sounded awfully like trout tickling on a smaller scale.

 

unfortunately for the world i have made some commercially available recordings, though none had anything to do with punk, and their sales were mercifully small. but never mind me, i've long harboured the suspicion that atj is jimmy page.

Saw him acoustic on a three hander gig with Edgar Winter (stunning, totally inspired) and Alvin Lee (verse - long long solo - verse - solo climax) last year. Thought McPhee looked lifeless in such company but didn't realise his ability to stand up was an achivement in itself.

 

ATJ = Jimmy Page, doubtful I'd say. Nice idea though.

 

If you ever decide to quite these parts Pulphack please promise to reveal all re the recordings in your parting post. Somewhere in the tonnage of recorded music that obliged me to buy a bigger house a while ago I may have treasured copies of your work.

Hail the omniscient Pulphack. Interesting to hear about TS McPhee. I wondered why he had morphed into a blueser. It all takes me back to less able performers...... nothineverappens, les flambeaux..... there's a thesis in here somewhere about minority progressive bands who didn't make it and must, I guess, have not been good enough to sustain a career. What became of them?

my dear sir, the rev ts has always been a blueser - back in the early days of the hogs they backed john lee hooker, and he was enamoured of their ability (well, ts') to keep up with his erratic bar count that he always insisted they back him wherever possible when he came to england thoughout the 60's - i think they back him on the live album reissued by charly in several packages over the years (one of their giorgio gomelsky live cache of tapes). vene their name is take from a john lee song (see side 2, split). the thing i love about ts is that is wwas no great technician, but listen to how MANY overdubs he ladles on a typical hogs tune, and how live hogs stuff (see bbc transcriptions from the seventies, or nineties live albums) resembles nothing so much as sonic youth! a man for the sonic blare, ourt ts...

 

in my experience of hunting down 70's progressive musos for an unpublished book in the nineties, it has to be said that loads of them ended up either workin for record companies or as car mechanics (the former include derek shulman of gentle giant who ended up siging bonjovi and being head of phongram in the us, and his brother ray who produced the sugarcubes, also paul conroy of gracious! who worked at stiff and phonogram; the latter include mick hawksworht of fuzzy duck and andromeda).

 

the saddest case was the 'classic' atomic rooster line up who recorded the 'death walks behind you' album: vince crane ended up in dexys midnight runners and then killed himself (not, i hasten to add, related). paul hammond died of complications frm alchoholism in the early nineties, and john ducann had a bit of nervous trouble (....) and retired to east anglia to run a nursery, where (as far as i know) he still lives. happier news for pete french, who joined the next year - he's recently revived his leafhound band (their 1971 decca lp is worth £900 if you have a copy) and has been deservedly getting rave reviews. i interviewed him once, and he's a nice bloke. a good rock vocalist, too.

 

of course, loads of old rockers are taking the pete french route these days, as the internet gives them access to a market that is still there. hell, why not...

 

sorry to burble on, but it does feature deaths, and i'm pissed.

i remember seeing dexys on wogan and having a jaw-hit-floor moment when i realised the hippy in the background was vince crane. i avoided the obvious gag until i'd shifted the dexy's albums to the back of the record rack.

 

gentle giant - good taste, sir. underrated, and far better than being lumped in with most prog would suggest.

 

btw, i was very pissed last night and became a party bore with that post. it shan't happen again... i hope.

Re all the above posts, I can highly recommend BBC Six Music's Freak Zone 5-8 on Sunday, plays weird, wonderful, overlooked and bizarre including obscure prog, Gentle Giant and - recently - a Groundhogs session.

 

They were a bit before my time but alongside the punk and post punk stuff that saw action on the common room record player when I were a lad was a copy of Split, much loved for the grinding insistence of Cherry Red. I've harboured a soft spot for the band ever since.

I have read this thread with increasing bewilderment as I am a complete philistine when it comes to modern music; not much better on the classical front either. I am sure that I have mentioned elsewhere within these hallowed portals that the only LP/Casette/CD's I have ever bought were Queens Greatest Hits, and that I only ever buy a copy when I change the car. Well, it's not entirely true dear readers as many, many years ago I bought a copy of Al Stewarts Love Chronicles. I played this on the old Decca Dansette til it wore through, and it is the only album where I know all the words. Recently I re-discovered this album in that modern CD format on Amazon and just had to buy it. Josco Junior enjoys it too (except when I sing along) and has a copy on his Ipod thingy.

Well the point is that AtJ / Jimmy Page was the lead guitarist on that album long before he became famous, and there are one or two bits in the music where you can hear him really strum it, and it makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle.

I believe that Van der Graaf Generator have been working again (they were a little puffed up but good); Quintessence; Spooky Tooth; Savoy Brown; Vinegar Joe; Second Hand; the names are surging through mymind. This is how Proust felt when he'd dunked his madeleine.

 

An album I loved was Appletree Theatre - not on CD alas. And i haven't got on to West Coast US stuff yet.

vdgg's new album is supposed to be as good as godbluff days (haven' caught it yet) and a fellow fan who caught the tour was raving for days. god, these are the sort of people i know... don't know if you'd heard, but sadly greg ridley from spooky tooth died last year/ earlier this year (need to check that, certainly last 12 months).

I paid £2 to Mushroom records in 1970 for a copy of Death May be your Santa Claus by Second Hand. It never arrived. Years later I saw it valued at £800 (then later still for £50 which is probably more like it). Eventually I got it on E-bay from Russia on CD. After all those years the two tracks I wanted it for were on a totally different album. I used to see Vinegar joe in Dorchester where they seemed to appear monthly. The remnants of Dada including Elkie B and Robert Palmer. Tremendous vocalists. Sad to see him die and her appear in that thing with Tony Hadley et al. The site with the Edgar Broughton has videos of Beefheart, Zappa, Spooky Tooth, and VDGG with 'A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers' but not, alas, 'Killer'.

 

Off to Google now. i must see whether edgar has changed a tad over the years.

Saw them live once ... with Tea and Symphony. Two really sound live acts. Is that a Harvest double bill?

 

Have just found an image of Edgar Broughton. Male pattern baldness has obviously treated him unkindly. Still looks as if he rocks though. Unbelievably, I learn that Apache Dropout featured on Juke Box Jury with David Jacobs. I certainly recall the Mothers of Invention playing on JBJ and receiving a resounding 'miss'.

 

Not sure when or what MOI song was played. 'Who are the Brain Police?' would have been appropriate. One of my favourite song titles.
