Ron Santo

Recommended Posts

I found an article about Ron. It is a bit long-winded but worth a read if you have 5 minutes.

http://www.pioneerlocal.com/cgi-bin/ppo-st...-04-267656.html

For those who don't have 5 minutes here are a few quotes about his life.

The passion Santo has for all things Cubs and his disdain for all things Mets are all part of a moving 90-minute documentary titled "This Old Cub," which chronicles Santo's struggles and triumphs dealing with the almost lifelong struggle with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.

In recent times, Ron Santo has been through a lot. In the last five years he's had both legs amputated, suffered multiple heart attacks (and was brought back to life on the operating table during one surgery) and underwent a host of other medical procedures.

"I feel good about myself and where I am at. I mean, being a diabetic, losing my legs, going through the 20 operations, the bypass ... that's almost impossible to go through all that and still be here. So there must be a plan for me."

And then real life stepped in front of Ron Santo once again. He was diagnosed with cancer of the bladder and was not able to accompany the team in the playoffs.

This bloke must have the constitution of an ox - but it has to catch up with him eventually. We should keep a close eye on him!

DWB ;)

What a truly great hero. Ron Santo is not only a sports hero, but a hero in every human sense.

God bless you Ron!

Just taking a loook at people that I have planned for my 2006 entry to the DDP, I noticed this Ron Santo forum buried in the back and thought I should bring it to the forefront.

Ron Santo (born in 1940) discovered that he had diabetes at the age of 18 and was given 25 years to live. He hid the secret through his entire baseball career, but now it appears to be catching up with him... he lost one leg in 2001, the other in 2002 and his number was retired in 2003. In 2005, he was just 8 votes away from being elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. All of this sounds to me like everyone is waiting for him to die; he seems to be going downhill.

On the other side, he is relatively young and I've heard amazing resilient. Furthermore, I'm not sure he passes the "famous enough" test in the UK (I'd be surprised if he even passed it in Canada, really). Not a sure bet by any means, but a reasonable consideration.

Deathlisting is so difficult these days. Back in '39 when Lou Gehrig was given 2-3 years to live, he made darn sure to meet his deadline. :dead3:

I'm still interested in what people think about Ron Santo. I neither particualarly support or oppose his candidacy, but I'm considering him for my own DDP, which means I at least consider him worthy of... consideration.

See? No one said anything, so I went ahead and picked him, and now he feels all shiny and new.

Don't give up, there's more than ten months left in the year. This may well be a clever deceit. Besides, there's something ironic about carking it just after such an optimistic bit af talk.

regards,

Hein

Santo is in the same boat as John Tenta I think. He's probably a lock to go a some point in the not-to-distant future. However, you have to consider whether or not he'll get a British obit as he is a non-fall-of-famer who hasn't played in a long time.

Ron Santo will probably get an obit for his cause, his struggle to overcome diabetes.

Ron Santo and John Tenta aren't on the same ship, they aren't even on the same body of water. Tenta has a form of cancer that is extremely life threatening but, if he's lucky enough to survive, he's in the clear (ostensibly, barring relapse). Ron Santo is faced with the threat of death at all times, since he's a diabetic. Given his condition, he has had an extremely long life and thus the chances of him dying grow higher each year. If Tenta survives his cancer, he goes back to the same chances of dying that anyone else his age has, which are slim.

Any particular reason for locking some of these threads?

Granted some of the shite posted on this forum recently isn't worth the little asterix but some of the locked threads have been star rated by the moderators. What's happening or is it purely for the secret circle? :(

A few have now been unlocked. I doubt anyone will miss the likes of the "Ron Santo" thread.

Ron Santo is not only on my DDP team, but others as well. Given his health and personal circumstances, he is a completely relevant and possible choice for not only DL, but for people's personal DDPs as well.

Furthermore, I would say the same about the wrestler's thread. John Tenta is extremely ill and it's not unreasonable to want a place to discuss him and others in his catagory (IE, wrestlers).

Just because a certain someone posted over 20 posts in less than an hour doesn't mean that relevant threads should be closed. Instead, that person should be talked to directly and asked not to most so much so often so quickly. Closing threads, especially useful ones, won't stem the tide of shite. People will just start new threads or post in the Dicky O thread where no one seems to care.

I have over 1000 posts and I've started only two topics. The problem is that people start threads when they could easily have posted in another thread of relevance. Granted, we don't want to overload threads because good candidates could be lost in the shuffle, I just don't think your (or whatever mod locked the threads) approach to the problem is going to produce any sort of meaningful solution.

My goodness! Did someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? :P

(PS. I agree, CP, with all above-made points, but especially points three, four, and five).

CP - please bear in mind the vast majority of posters on this site are non-US, so very few people will know who Ron Santo is. Heck, most Americans under 30 won't know who he is, even baseball fans. But good luck w/him on the DDP (so long as you don't beat DL on the year).

Having said that, you are quite right that locking threads is a bit pointless, and if people want to write about any subject they will, and the proof of its popularity will be found in the pudding that is the number of posts. I'll unlock those that remain shut.

Fair enough. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have heard much about him if it hadn't been for Deathlist. But I also think the best thing about the forum is that it allows to learn about people in all different cultures. I wouldn't know half the British celebrities or MPs that I know now if it hadn't been for these forums.

Spiffy! And I'll try to maintain a good post quality. :P

On a note that's somewhat irrelevant to Ron Santo, the world's oldest baseball players turns 100 today. For those of you who are into baseball, it's a goodly article that includes a picture.

Not a good pick I would think, probably wouldn't get a British Obit and seems fairly hale, but interesting nonetheless.

I agree - Although the future holds many promising canidates involving MLB.

For example ~ Barry Bonds would make a fine selection one day.

His fame should hit the charts on a high level.

BS, you have the irreplacable ability to ignore the latest thing that was posted in a thread and to respond to something else that was months older!

Sometimes I don't even bother reading posts. I'm just so uninterested. Especialy when my interest is elsewhere.
