All pre 74 WC winning captains now dead, all 74 and onwards still with us. Beckenbauer, Passarella, Zoff and Maradona: all have a good chance of being the next name crossed off the list.

A shame, but he's part of history forever, really. (Well, sporting history...)

As for the post-70 captains, Zoff seems most likely to go next off that list, hasn't he had health issues in the recent past? Though I wouldn't put it beyond Matthaus or Dunga to suddenly snuff it one day.

You have to do it via the "insert link" thingy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5HbmeNKino

It works on IE, but I don't use IE, I use Firefox!

Hein used witchcraft; that's why video embedding doesn't work now he's gone.

Last but not least, 1958 survivors. Again, I'd be grateful if someone could tidy up this to make it readable.

Fun looking back at his best ever goal.

Plus, here is the ex chairman who authorised his signing whilst injured, disguised as a golf bag.

Gabriel Badilla, 2006 FIFA World Cup for Costa Rica, dead at just 32

He played in the Costa Rica/Poland game, which presumably very few watched here, as it was on BBC4/ITV4 (delete as applicable) while the other final group game, Germany/Ecuador, was on the main channel.

Peter Brabrook, who played against the USSR in the competition, has died aged 79. http://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2016/december/11-december/peter-brabrook-1937-2016

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Brabrook

Interestingly, it looks like he made a cameo in Til Death Us Do Part: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2500006/

No surprise given Garnett's West Ham supporting proclivities.

Did I ever do that List of Living World Cup managers I was planning? I might have got distracted...

Anyhow, very brief interview with Ignacio Trelles, manager of the 1962 and 66 Mexico side, who turned 100 this year. I'd say a centenarian multiple world cup appearing manager would be a cert for a Guardian obit when he goes.
