From the Guardian article about his return, btw:

Quote

Liverpool will not be able to play this get-out-of-jail card every week, though it is hard to envisage a side with the massive self-belief demonstrated in their 2-0 win over Roma going out of the competition to Bayer Leverkusen. With the prospect of Manchester United awaiting in a semi-final, which would guarantee the presence of an English club in the final in Glasgow, no one imagines Anfield has seen the last of its great European nights this season.

Brilliant prediction there.

I believe Thompson was never officially the caretaker/temporary manager of Liverpool, he only performed the role and was never given any official title or position by the club.

Buffon applauding the Swedish national anthem while the rest of the stadium boos it and whistles over it, shows why he truly is a good guy. Sad to see his international career end like this though.

A Cliff Mitchelmore commentary on Football in 1960.

If you look really closely you'll see a youngish LFN trying to jump the turnstiles at WHL...

World Cup draw in a few hours. Think a nice easy group for England would do, like Brazil, Denmark and Nigeria.

Hmmm - I think I might score just over 50%.

Front Row: Maradonna, Banks, Blanc (?), a Brazilian or possibly Ruud Gullit pulling a funny face????, recognise but can't place, Forlan (?)

Back Row: Looks like a lad I went to school with but suspect he might be a footballer too.

Have you got a better close up of the woman in the background?:P

The Brazilian is Cafu, and "recognise but can't place" is, as Spade points out, Cannavaro.

Back row is Carlos Puyol. In his grunge phase apparently.

Thanks - I would have been guessing a long time before I said Carlos Puyol!

I think if it was a Magnificent Seven remake Maradonna would be one of the bandidos.

Conratulations to Lewis Dunk

He is the first player in Premier League history to score for Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd in the same season.  #BigGamePlayer.

:)
