Well I did a bit of research - quite a character, a bit of an artist and in his senior year too.

No news on his health though so I have to presume its good. He might just pass the famousness test but I admit to not having heard of him before. One for the candidate database I think.

You mean Kurt Vonnegut, the author of Slaughterhouse Five, the famous anti-war book ? He's not famous enough ?? :D

Try http://www.duke.edu/~crh4/vonnegut/index.html

Love this quote of his ...

The Internet stuff is spooky. I am of course not on line. I do remember ham radio operators though, usually in attics or basements, pallid, unsociable, and obsessed, inhabiting a spirit world, and harmless ...

We can't be connected with them, surely ?

He's also been misidentified as the author of the Sunscreen speech, which was famously turned into a Baz Lurhmann song (he of Moulin Rouge) ...

http://www.mp3miracle.com/BazLuhrmann/Sunscreen/ (I checked for viruses - it's safe)

... though to confuse things further, I don't think it's Baz Luhrmann's voice you hear in the song ... :D

I didn't see any ad ... but then I have a popup stopper installed, so they tend to get squished before they get to my eyeballs.

Yep, you don't need plugins or anything else to download.

Will you two cut out the teccie crap. This isn't some sad chatroom for IT professionals with no life you know.

It's intellectual forum for other people with no life.

Hi Typhoid Harry

That link doesn't work

I think some amazon links are 'session based'. Care to mention the title of the book you are trying to link to?

Actually (and now that I THINK about it), that was a search result page at Amazon on Vonnegut, the number of familiar books is quite surprising...

:D He has to be on the next list. 82 years old he's gonna buy it soon. On a side note I am deriving far too much joy from predicting the death of other humans. But I'm ok with that.

For a minute there I thought you were having a conversation with yourself, until I saw DWB's annotation!

Re Kurt

The great man is on BBC 2 tonight - 10 Feb - 7-8 on The Culture Show.

Worth staying in for.

Vonnegut's just published a new book - A Man Without a Country - not something Salinger has done in decades. Also Vonnegut's self-depreciating humour is probably the one strong life preserver he's hung onto over the years.

Salinger; with his obsessive love of privacy, could be driven into a decline if he ever chanced on this thread.
