Instead of choking on a piece of sandwich, Mama Cass Elliot died of a heart attack on July 29, 1974 aged 32.

She was born Ellen Naomi Cohen and rose to fame with The Mamas & the Papas, an excellent folk rock vocal group of the mid to late 60s. After the breakup of The Mamas & the Papas, Cass Elliot embarked on a solo singing career. Her most successful song was “Dream a little dream of me”, which reached No. 12 on the US (Billboard Hot 100) and No. 11 in the UK in 1968.

The picture shows Vincent aged 13 or so. The prominent right ear will become an important plot device later in the story of his life.

Hein

Being Scottish I don't normally like anyone who has anything to do with the England Football Team. But you can't help love Bobby Robson who died of lung cancer in 2009

It’s been 10 years ago since French actress Marie Trintignant died of a cerebral edema on August 1 2003 aged 41. Her death was a result of being repeatedly punched by her boyfriend Bertrand Cantrant, singer of rock group Noir Désir.

Such a sad story.

Also calling it a day on August 1, 2003, Guy Thys, an overlooked member of the "name a famous Belgian" club. He helmed that sadly forgotten great Belgian national side of the 1980s, finishing runners-up in the 1980 Euros and fourth in the 1986 WC. And, let's be honest, they were robbed by the man three posts up's England team in 1990.

Ten years to the day since Don Estelle died, never forget he had a number one single with "Whispering Grass" back in 1975. His daughter carried on the tradition when her song, "American Boy", topped the charts over 30 years later.

That's my joke for the day.
