Quiz Show Hosts

Recommended Posts

So Bobby "Dazzler" George is on Twitter and in between his views on West End musicals and the observation that "All these people in the public eye having affairs! As my old mum used to say 'a stiff pricks got no conscious'! till you come your coco!" I also found him wishing former Bullseye host Jim Bowen well erlier this year. Apparently the erstwhile Bullseye host has had a series of strokes so far this year. Bowen also strikes me as the kind of guy you could get some good "build up material" before he goes, maybe an interview in The Sun or the Mail taking a wide-angle lens photo of him stumbling out of a hospital, so fuck it, give him a thread.

I get the first bit (assuming it's a typo for conscience, spellcheck strikes again?). But what in the world does the other bit mean?

what has happened to Bob Holness (however you spell his name) who used to host my favourite show of all time, Block Busters!!!!! He has dissapeared and so has Roy Walker from Catch Frase. What are they doing now and are they still well, which is the main question.

Good news is we found him.Bad news is, he just died :(http://www.bbc.co.uk...t-arts-16443263

Right I am being stupid here (no surprise)

Are you talking about who is in my avatar ?

In my avatar is Damon Killian, from The Running Man (dunno why I chose him for my avatar :banghead: ) AKA Richard Dawson

Family Feud host and Hogan's Heroes star Richard Dawson dies at 79 http://abcnews.go.co...ud-host-was-79/

The team that picked him surely has to have the DDP distinction of the greatest slant towards the beginning of the alphabet whilst not being a terrorist theme team.

Sad to hear. One of my earliest tv memories are Card Shark reruns on the Usa Network.

With the deaths of Terry Wogan and Paul Daniels I began to think that hosts of the classic British quiz shows are getting thin on the ground

Here are the obvious ones:

  • Nicholas Parsons - Sale of the Century
  • Bruce Forsyth - Play Your Cards Right
  • Roy Walker - Catchphrase
  • Bamber Gasgoine - University Challenge
  • Jim Bowen - Bullseye
  • Tom O' Connor - Crosswits
  • Lionel Blair - Name That Tune
  • Michael Aspel - Give Us A Clue
  • William G Stewart - 15 to 1
  • Michael Barrymore - Strike it Lucky

Well some of those are only loosely quiz shows, more game shows, which come in all shapes and sizes. Widening your net slightly in that case, I can think of a few more aged 60+:

Dale Winton - Supermarket Sweep (60)

Gordon Burns - Krypton Factor (73)

Jim Davidson - Big Break/Generation Game (62)

Les Dennis - Family Fortunes (62)

Noel Edmonds - Telly Addicts/Deal or No Deal (67)

Clive Anderson - Whose Line Is It Anyway (63)

Richard O'Brien - Crystal Maze (73)

Ed Tudor-Pole - Crystal Maze (60)

Chris Tarrant - Who Wants to be a Millionaire (69)

Jasper Carrott - Golden Balls (I know, I know...) (71)

And Paxman's 65 now too...

Admittedly, of these, I would say only Gordon Burns and Richard O'Brien (maybe Les Dennis and Chris Tarrant) deserve entry into your pantheon of classic game show hosts. And you've made me sad now when I thought about all the ones no longer with us. No Wogan, no Bob, no Robert Robinson, no Bob Holness, no Richard Whiteley...

Oh, and then there's the bloke what presented It's a Knockout! I wonder what happened to him...?

Paul O'Grady (Blankety Blank) - 2 heart attacks behind him (60)

Anne Robinson (Weakest Link) - former alcoholic and has had skin cancer (71)

Henry Kelly (Going for Gold) (69)

and pushing it a bit

Prof Heinz Wolff (Great Egg Race) - 87

Bibliogryphon - I didn't realise Bamber was still above ground until reading your post (81). Bing Bong Bamber, Bamber Gascoigne.

Another pretty obscure one that I didn't include

Steve Jones - The Pyramid Game now aged 72.
