British novelist Evelyn Waugh died 50 years ago today aged 62 of a heart attack. He was best known for his novel, "Decline and Fall".

James Anthony Bailey (Barnum & Bailey Circus) quit clowning around, 110 years ago.

And if anyone needed more Proof that there was thuggery going on in the rap world, it was the band D12 from my hometown Detroit. I wasn't really into them but do recall Proof's getting shot like it was yesterday--'Twas pretty big local news--10 years ago today.

BATON ROUGE, LA – Percy Sledge, an R&B, soul, gospel and traditional pop singer, died Thursday at his home at the age of 74.

He is best known for the song, "When a Man Loves a Woman", a number one hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Singles, in 1967.

Percy was a 2005 inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rosa Singleton Sledge.

His funeral April 21st will be broadcast in HD live via streaming on the internet at www.percysledge.org. (Source: The Advocate)

Break w tradition to give one last nod of appreciation to Percy Sledge, who died this day last year.

As well as gratuitously taking any opportunity to pun, I hope to choose a person of interest who may have some intellectual and educational value for the DL cognoscenti. I therefore felt Simone De Beauvior as a giant in existential philosophy warranted a mention over an actor who was famous for being a straight man to a camp comedian and making endless pussy jokes. There is a connection of course, as De Beauvior's nickname was beaver.
