Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands, born 31st January 1938, daughter of the late Queen Juliana and the late Prince Benhard, celebrates 25 years of sitting on the Throne of The Netherlands on 30th April 2005.

Not about to pop her clogs like her parents, but no doubt she is ageing (you can see how much she has aged in the last 3 years by looking at her face from the beginging of 2002 and now) since the deaths of her husband (Prince Claus 2002) and her parents (2004). Though probably worth while keeping an eye on her.

(Doubt if her Silver Jubliee will be as well celeberated as QEII's 25th and 50th Jubillees)

A little more detail: in May she's to undergo surgery for a knee injury.

I suppose she'll be around for a while. She's only 68. Her mum quit the job at 70 and lived another 24 years.

Hein

Her mum might have lived 24 years later but she had Alzhimers's Disease for the last 10 of them, or so we are lead to belive.

This fact was hushed for years by the royal household, but after she died it became clear Juliana had been completely potty in her last few years.

This doesn't mean much for the longevity of Beatrix. I expect she'll be head of state for another five years or so. She may well live in her nineties. Both her parents lived long, she has no serious health problems and she has the best health care avaiable.

Hein

I see she has become a grandmother once again, the heir to the throne has had a second daughter; i wounder if it looks like a carbon copy of her grandmother, like its poor sister does Amila, or whatever the child's name is.

Bloody hell!, They are an exact copy.... I thought the previous one looked a hell of lot like beatrix (i.e. the same forehead shape) but this new baby looks the spitting image!, As a baby that is. Yes, extreamly Disturbing :rip:

Alexia Juliana Marcela Laurentien -

Hein, i did think Juliana would be included somewhere in her name, but Alexia? I supose its a female version of her father's name but am i right in thinking that that one of Prince Bernhard's extramarital daughters is called Alexia?

The Prince of Orange said in a TV interview last tuesday that his wife wanted to name her daughter after him. In the Netherlands it's frowned on when parents name a child after themselves, although in the house of Orange it's quite common. The kings were William I through III, the first queen Wilhelmina.

Indeed the Queen has a half-sister named Alexia, born in 1967. She has another one called Alicia, born in 1954 from an American mother.

I wish they'd stop. It's bad enough that my country is a monarchy, instead of a proper republic. That the royals are procreating like rabbits only makes it worse.

Hein

It's a cheaper monarchy than some monarchies i can think of..................

True.

It's not a matter of money, republics cost a bunch too. It's a matter of priciple: a proper democracy is a republic.

That, and the look of sheepish adoration in the eyes of the public when a royal is in view.

Hein

True again, quite a left winger aren't you Hein? I think i would sooner keep it rather than get one of those systems where you have a president and a a prime minster ect ....ect - Then you fall into the problem of having a country that is top heavey with government. Such as Australia which is quite top heavey with government-though not a republic

The German model (a purely ceremonial president and a Chancellor who is head of government) would do nicely in the Netherlands. Italy does it like that, too, but I don't think that's such a good example. :)

Well, I consider myself a left-winger too, though not a republican. (The only member of the Socialist Party who's truly orangistic!)

The system works perfectly well as it is, the royalist element make our national festivals far more interesting than a president would and we happen to have an outstanding monarch, who's taking her job very seriously and whose diplomatic skills benefit our foreign policy and the dutch economy to a great extent.

Whether the Prince of Orange will follow in her footsteps remains to be seen. In all fairness, Willem-Alexander grew on me (metaphorically speaking of course) in the last five years or so, so I'm not too worried about the future.

What a shame someone had to spoil this little tete á tete between Hein and Gloomy.

But since the deed now is done I'd like to put my own oar in by offering the following from this webpage which I'm eternally grateful to Mr Josco for putting me onto.

The Dutch royal family are big time reptilian shapeshifters.

Comments, anyone?

I was looking for any clues that this mr. Icke was referring to the Dutch Royals as lizards in a metaphorical way, but couldn't find any. For that reason, the one word that comes to my mind is: barking. The guy suffers from an incurable and severe form of schizofrenia.

But it is indeed an amusing site.

I think Mr Icke is a person of sound mind & I agree entirely with everything he says.

Asked for comment, HRH Prince Constantijn remarked:

"If we're shapeshifters, how does Mr Icke know we're reptilians?"

Yup, she's abdicated.

There were a few hints in what she said to journalists in the last few days and when a TV speech by the queen was announced for 19:00h it was clear what she had in mind. I didn't see the speech, but as I understand it, she's announced het abdication for April 30, and that day Willem-Alexander will be sworn in as king.

A king for a change. He'll probably make a mess of it, so I have good hope he'll be the last Dutch monarch.

ETA: BBC has the story in all gory details.

Hein

More bad luck for the Dutch royals. Queen B has undergone surgery after a fall caused her to break a cheekbone.

I decided to split this topic from "Queen Elizabeth II", as I think she's worthy of her own topic.

ETA: and made a complete mess of it; I completly forgot HRH already got a topic, in which adrian already posted the news. Anyway, mess sorted now.

In the news: Beatrix breaks cheekbone in a fall.

Hein

The former queen of Holland won't be attending the national holiday celebrating the monarchy for the first time. They don't say why precisely why she is not attending (I don't believe the "new look" thing)
And I find it a bit suspicious because as far as I can see the rest of the royal family will be there.

Just wanted to say I have a lovely photo of Beatrix hanging in my shed. She dons a Shell Oil crown someone stuck on her head. I stole it from a rig I worked on in 1988 as it was terribly amusing. Likely the only American with the Queen's photo on display.
