African Leaders - Despots and Democratic

The President of Somalia Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed may be about to resign because of health reasons . Apparently a group of German doctors have been flown in to attend to him.

His BBC profile mentions that he had a liver transplant in the 1990s. This article says that on top of his liver problems, he also suffers from Parkinsons and Alzheimers.

Things seem to be looking bleak for the President

Somalia's interim President Abdullahi Yusuf has fallen ill and been flown to neighbouring Ethiopia for treatment.

A BBC correspondent says Mr Yusuf, 72, collapsed on Friday morning in the seat of government, Baidoa.

Prime Minister Nur Hussein Hassan said his condition was not serious, but close aides have suggested otherwise.

Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf, normally mentioned because of his liver problems, has just survived a mortar attack on his house.

Troubled waters for Malawi's President Bingu Mutharikahinga, who has been previously mentioned on DL. This article says his prostate cancer was already at an advanced stage when it was diagnosed and this one describes him as terminally ill. It also mentions he is digging his own grave, which might lead one to assume that he doesn't share the optimism of the Malawian Ministry of Information, who continue to insist Mutharikahinga is in good health.

State House sources say Mutharika visited the gravesite on Good Friday and was pleased with the construction works. The grave is just adjacent to the resting-place of the deceased First Lady Madame Ethel Mutharika. Mota Engil is constructing the President's grave for free as they are getting more business contracts from government. :skull:

President Umaru Yar’Adua of Nigeria, who has been mentioned before, is believed to have been diagnosed with a rare incurable condition called Churg-Strauss Syndrome. He was flown out of the country to Germany last weekend after "suffering swellings all over his body".

Thank you for that update , Devon , because Yar'Adua is my unique pick on DDP. Unfortunately, I did something I never do: look up a disease on the internet. Churg Strauss , despite sounding like a forgotten sib of Johann, isn't really something you want to deal with since it affects either the lungs and heart or kidney and liver. Per Wiki, it's always found in individuals with a previous history of allergies (yours truly).<_<

Changes in the Zimbabwean regime may not spell good news for fomer President Mengistu, who has been sentenced to death in absentia. Whoever succeeds Mugabe will have a tough call on this one.

If that's the case, I don't think Mengistu will be travelling back to Absentia in the near future....

Liberian General Isaac Saye Mussah, who went by the catchy nickname of "General Dead Body Killer" due to his reputation for "shooting dead bodies" has died aged 61. He was a one time military adviser to former President Charles Taylor.

My favourite African leader, President Bingu Mutharika of Malawi, has fired 15 of his security guards on suspicion of witchcraft and moved out of his official residence as he is convinced it is haunted. He's been experiencing disturbed nights as well:

Pastor Malani Mtonga his religious advisor reportedly told journalists that Christian priests had been called to exorcise the "evil spirits" as the President was feeling rodents crawling all over his body during sleep.

I hope the prostate cancer doesn't kill him any time soon, he's a star in the making.

Just the type of guy to take military advice from.

"What do you think of the situation on the southern flank, Dead Body Killer?"

"Well, it's a bit dicey. They're still holding the high ground and seem to be holding fast, even though they're all technically dead. I'd advise a full airstrike on the cemetery to be followed up by a slow advance to shoot all the corpses that remain. You can't be too careful with these dead johnnies."

He's not really a despot, but he is an African, and he's a political leader - Levy Mwanawasa is not a well chap..

It's worse than that. He's dead, Octopus.

Hmm, the headline currently reads: "Zambia denies President Mwanawasa is dead", and the story says he's fine, resting up nicely in bed, etc.

Too bad it's not 31 December, because this would be some low-hanging (and apparently quite rotten) fruit for DL pickers. Never heard of him.

It's the week for ridiculous African leader's names, as President Omar Bongo of Gabon made news when he defended President Mugabe's triumphant election win.

someone should beat him like a drum

Well, he was dead when I posted. Quite a remarkable recovery really.

Actually, if he is still going, it's good news. Mwanawasa is one of Africa's better leaders.

No recent news on the health of President Bingu Mutharika of Malawi. However, a year after the death of his wife, he is reported to have found a soulmate in Vera Chiluba, the ex-wife of ailing former Zambian President Frederick Chiluba.

Vera, is intimately in love with Mutharika and she sent the Malawi ruler several presents ranging from men’s underwear, her own knickers and potency pills :rip:

President Mutharika is 76 and suffers from advanced prostate cancer.
