Another old time French leading lady who is still alive is Michele Morgan, born 1920:

I will edit the main lists a few posts above to include Michele and Chorizo's suggestions.

EDIT: Done. Thanks, Chorizo, for the South American additions in particular. I must shamefully admit that I know virtually nothing about the cinema of that continent.

Added three more vintage Fraus to the main list on the previous page:

Ruth Leuwerik, born 1924, German

http://en.wikipedia....i/Ruth_Leuwerik

Sonja Ziemann, born 1926, German

http://en.wikipedia....i/Sonja_Ziemann

Lisolette Pulver, born 1929, Swiss:

They all seem to be fairly high profile in Germany and are apparently famous enough warrant to merit their own en.wikipedia articles, too.

Thanks, Chorizo. I will update the main list in the next day or two. I had completely forgotten about Zeffirelli and I didn't realise that Resnais was still alive. Didn't realise Jodorowsky and the Taviani brothers were so old.

I was trying to find some information on Nathalie Pascaud (the leading lady in the famous French slapstick comedy, Monsieur Hulot's Holiday). Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be any information on whether she is dead or alive anywhere. She doesn't even have a page in the French Wikipedia and sources like IMDB don't have any info on her either. If anyone can find anything, she might be an interesting person to add to the list.

Tonino Guerra

The Italian screenwriter and poet has died aged 92. He was nominated for an Academy Award 3 times but failed to win each time. The films were Carlo Ponti's "Casanova 70" (1965), Antonioni's "Blow-Up" (1966) and Fellini's "Amarcord" (1973).

I just learned that Marina von Ditmar, best known for playing Sophie von Riedesel in Herr Goebbels' 1940s version of Münchhausen is still alive at the grand old age of 97. She only has a German Wikipedia page, not an English one, so the chances of a UK obit are virtually nil but I'll put her on the list above anyway. ;)

She apparently comes from a noble family of Estonian and Lithuanian knights.

Misanthropic, depressive, alcoholic, chain-smoker: Aki Kaurismaki

:o

On another note, I watched the Seventh Seal for the first time in ages over the weekend and did a little research afterwards. Max von Sydow was born in 1929 so he is a good one to add to the list but unfortunately Death has died.

I just discovered that Chris Marker, the genius French director best known for his legendary science fiction short La Jetee and who also produced some significant filmed essays, is still alive at 90 so he is yet another one to put on the watch list.

Lina Haag, former leader of the Youth Movement of the German Communist Party, has died aged 105.

So far no English obituaries, so a loss for Death Speaks German.

I didn't know of her before this but I have just been reading about her in Wikipedia. It is quite an amazing story:

[After Hitler's rise to power], Lina spent many years in Remand Prison, during which time she met other prominent prisoners such as Liselotte Herrmann. Lina was freed in 1938 after managing to turn her camp commandant at Lichtenburg against the Stuttgart Gestapo.

Once released, she was reunited with her daughter, moved to Berlin, and secured a job. She visited the headquarters of the SS almost daily to petition for her husband's release. In 1940, she obtained permission for an audience with Heinrich Himmler, who secured Alfred's release from the Mauthausen concentration camp. Alfred survived physical torture while detained there and also at Dachau concentration camp.

German film actor Ulrich Muehe has died.

And now his widow Susanne Lothar, who played his wife in Michael Haneke's Funny Games, has died at 51.

She didn't outlive him for long in the film either.

That is young. I haven't seen Funny Games but I greatly enjoyed Haneke's Hidden and the White Ribbon.

Blimey, him and both his wives gone in the space of a decade none of them made it to 60 :(

I'm really looking forward to Haneke's Amour

I very surprised to find she has died very noticeable face for anyone who watches European foreign cinema. I'm guessing her death is quite big in Germany. funny games and the white ribbon are two of my favourite foreign movies and her husband in the lives of others put in a great performance too. Three out of the four main characters from the original funny games have died. I bet Arno frisch is feeling a little scared this morning.
