The chap that draws Bristow in the Evening Standard must be getting on now. Frank Dickens I think his name is. You got me thinking about the newspaper strips of the 70s and 80s. There was Fred Basset, the Gambols, Sporting Sam, not to mention George and Lynn who seemed to live in a permanent state of undress ... I'm pretty certain Giles is deceased though. How would you describe a dead cartoonist - de-syndicated?

Reportedly dead: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1053522731362085&id=254017831312583

A DDP Pick so awaiting the usual.

Cartoonist for Mad Magazine, John Caldwell, has died.

My older brother (who growing up had a Mad Magazine collection) was upset about the news.

Now Jack Davis, cartoonist and co-founder of Mad Magazine, has died aged 91.

Also,

Richard Thompson, American cartoonist known for his 'Cul de Sac' comic strip, has died aged 58.

Jack Davis gets a QO via the Mail's AP piggybacking, which presumably opens up the doors for a lot of 60s American comic book artists to be viable DDP picks.

I have heard rumours that Japanese Manga artist Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter x Hunter) is so unwell he can no longer sit up despite being born in 1966.

Trending high enough on Twitter to make me think he'll get an Indie obit at least.

I remember reading his Dr Who Weekly spin-off 'Abslom Daak: Dalek Killer' when I was 4. RIP... :rip:

Was he known to be ill, or is this one of those DDP related lucky guesses?

The guy who created the New Zealandic comic Footrot Flats, Murray Ball, has dementia according to his wife. She revealed it about a year ago in a radio program.

27 January 2016: http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoons/audio/201786997/murray-ball-pam-ball

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Ball

"Pam stated that Murray's health has been poor for the last six years, and that he now suffers from dementia."

He was born in 1939 (exact DOB unclear) and Footrot is, at least if you go by the # of existing Wikipedia languages articles, only popular in the English-speaking world, Denmark and Sweden. In fact, even I had heard of it (Fähunden) and I'm not much of a comics person.

Are we ONLY supposed to suggest deadpool candidates in the "Ideas and Possibilities" thread? Seriously, Paul...

Ok, sorry Paul. Thought this was a post similar to the one you made in the Ingmar Bergman thread.

Going back to topic, I listened to the full radio program and his wife doesn't seem to specify which type of dementia it is, but I reckon it's in the later-stages by now.

His health, coupled with his relatively advanced age, means that he could be a decent pick for any of the various 2018 pools should he be lucky enough to survive the year.

True dat. Moreso 'Belgian cartoonist' used in a sentence on a website loosely concerned with a minutia of fame. Like stories about Estonian club owners.

Hey, nothing wrong with Estonian club owners stories. I once heard that Rowdy Joonas Purje once let his nightclub stay up till 8pm, if you can imagine the decadence... Heh.

Inventor of "Swamp Thing" Bernie Wrightson has something wrong with his brain

I don't like Swamp Thing either but that's a bit harsh.
