As a replacement for Pat on the Sky At Night - how about his curly-haired mate from Queen - you know, the guitarist who borrows his wifes wig. He's a very keen star-watcher - got his own telescope and everything!

DWB :pop:

DWB - Yeah, I too saw the hairy one from Queen on that Venus transit programme. He does seem to be proper into it. Maybe he could add a musical lilt or accompaniment to any star bound musings.

Ah, I believe this is where someone must make a crack about Freddie Mercury and Uranus.

Anyone?

Damn you Anubus - On my walk to work this morning I was trying to construct something along the lines of...

Brian May's fascination with astronomy started several years ago when he observed Mercury entering a galaxy of stars

Sadly I arrived at work before I managed to turn it into anything amusing :pop:

This isn't the first time he's eaten something that doesn't agree with him.

Doesn't Patrick often tell the story of how he once Swallowed a fly?

I don't know why he swallowed that fly.

I'll second Brian May ...

He's an astroenthusiast, media savvy, not got a lot to do nowadays, can write a good theme tune, might hang around a while yet, and is eccentric enough (that hair, being married to Anita Dobson).

"I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky

Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity" Don't Stop Me Now

Hmm, if Mr. May considers a shooting star to be like a large predatory feline oblivious to the discoveries of Isaac Newton, then I doubt he is quite the right man for the S.A.N. job.

However, if Mr. May-Dobson, is going to build a telescope or astrolabe out of bits of his own fireplace in the same spirit as his home-built guitar, I'll definitely be tuning in.

Perhaps he'll die?

He missed this month's Sky At Night due to illness, having noticeably had to spend the previous (Venus Transit) one seated the whole time. I think you could tell that he was cock-a-hoop to have lived to have seen this literally once-in-every-other-lifetime event, something that is not true of solar eclipses.

Hate to say it, Grim, but I really would not be surprised if he went before the end of 2004.

Actually, he missed last month's.

First time in 40 years, he said. To food poisoning.

He was there this month (yesterday), with his usual company of nerds (& Prof. Zarnecki, one of my old uni. lecturers !)

Repeated next Saturday, around noonish usually.

Are you saying that, should we actually have to breathe occasionally, then it would be better to do so less the oxygen ?

I wait with baited breath ...
