That UK Election Thing

Recommended Posts

Despite being left leaning. I am actually quite happy with the appointed upper chamber but many of the senior Lords are famous for their prior political service or service in other walks of life.

They just won't be conveniently collected all in one place.

Just a reminder to all the posters here who love discussing the lords (or the elderly ones), if you elect Ed Miliband he will replace the Lords with an 'elected senate' so you won't be able to put them on your teams next year cos the press will probably say your average "ex-lord" isn't famous enough. I can understand why he'd want to do it though, since they have two elected chambers over there in the US and look how totally blissful things are there and nobody ever accuses their politicians of being old, out of touch or not deserving their place in congress!

They'd probably gain more fame as time went on though. I'd prefer us to sort the lower chamber out (give us fucking pr) before we reform the upper chamber.

Why would the press say the average ex-lord isn't famous enough. It's still a shoo-in story, and the lower number of elected senators would be mitigated by the turnover of bodies as each cohort faced re-election, so, obits wise, probably business as usual, with the ex-senators, or the more notable of them anyway, being useful obit fodder.

That sounds right. As I underdstand it, the political significance of the Lords is minimal.

Yup. They basically have to do what the government wants or the parliament act will be invoked. They are an utterly pointless institution whose sole purpose is to allow ex-peados politicians and their ring members mates in high places to think they have some importance and by them not being arrested influence.

Opinion polls indicate that Ed Miliband is going to be the new prime minister. I assume this is something you brits are happy about? I must say he seems like a decent guy

Ive spent the last few weeks not wanting to kick the TV screen in but I cannae hold it no more.

Milliband is a massive cunt. Another 'socialist' that makes all the gestures and talks a load of shite about social justice and the like while he lives in a million pound house that has a Kitchen for his missus and himself and one for his NANNY and his kids.

What fucking planet does this massive tool live on?

Privileged? Oxbridge? Etonian? What kind of moron truly thinks that Labour is any better/more working class than the Tories???

As soon as Labour get in the money will fuck off abroad faster than diarrhea down a bog. That's something they don't quite grasp, the wealthy tend to create wealth for the rest of us working classes to live on. DOH!!!

Ive worked under Labour and the Tories, both are shite but one is massively shite. Labour.

Greens? Hahahahahashahahahahahahahahahaha.

Lib Dems? See ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

UKIP? Hmmmm. If you look beyond the mud slinging "They is a bunch of racists innit" they have ideas that are not too bad, I mean, we wouldn't be throwing foreign aid at India anymore, right?

The worst possible nightmare will be a Labour SNP coalition. I truly wished the Scottish electorate had shown more balls and had voted for independence.

The Tories are what they are and have always been, rich cunts that look after the rich.

Having said all of that, what the fuck is wrong with our society?? Food banks?? What the fuck is that about!!!

Anybody would think that poverty is a new fangled concept, which, well, it must be.

We have bred a citizen that takes absolutely no responsibility for themselves and expects the state to house them, clothe them and now do the fucking shopping for them.

Pathetic.

Nobody seems to get it, we are all screwed, and screwing the 'fat cat bankers' has more to do with seeking justice than making the economy work. There IS money out there and there ARE jobs, unfortunately, due to the callous treatment and subjugation of the working classes by the capitalist elite, if you don't earn a fat wage, own a house and drive a car that is three years old or newer you are a VICTIM ........... which is great, eh.

Politics isn't radical, to be radical will require honesty and all Politicians are fucking liars so that's out then.

Same old shit with a different wrapper then,

Getting access to food banks is difficult and should be only possible if you genuinely have no or very little income (zero hours contracters or people who are waiting for benefits) , also it's not the state running them.

Quite true, I lumped that in with the general 'hold your hand out and go """UGHHHHH""" benefits culture, which was wrong but, somehow fitting.

Thanks Alf/Steptoe/whatever.

Agree about the demented denial of Ed Miliband's poshness though. He's a sheltered, spluttering, wobbly-kneed 45-year-old manchild who makes Moonface look like Abraham Lincoln by comparison. Also, LOL @ going on about "rich people and poor people" or something, when Robosnot will probably pass the "Liberating Those Poor Misunderstood Islamic Geniuses from Horrible Old Nasty Right-Wing Racist Tory Laws About Not Beheading and Stoning Random People At Will Act" on day 2.

Miliband is a dork. He is a swot. He can solve a Rubicks Club with ease. Will he be a good Prime Minister? Who knows? I guess he will, but will never get the plaudits for being so. The numbers don't stack up yet, so it looks very likely that it will be another Lib Lab pact. This time more than likely without a LibDem deputy prime ministership and a formal coalition.

I think David milliband would of been a great PM. Instead we are stuck with his younger, creepy backstabbing brother who got all the leftover DNA.

Backstabbing? Really? I would have thought it took a fair pair of cojones to take on the Establishment choice for opposition leader and win against all expectations and it being his brother as well. It's democratic politics not Jacobean court intrigue.

Or is Miliband the elder the more "acceptable" looking Jew?

The Labour Party were trying to distance themselves from Blair and the whole Iraq war issue. David Milliband would have been a continuation of the Blair project.

Ed offered a choice of a (more) socialist alternative which is why he stood. He gave the party a choice, he didn't secretly brief to the press that his brother was a complete tosspot who devoured children for breakfast every morning. He didn't break the rules or play dirty. The whole back stabbing thing is media narrative trying to scare the electorate away from EM because they can't get the polls to move any other way (and its still not working).

I think that if Ed did have to do a deal with the SNP he might get more socialist policies through which may go down well with his grassroots supporters.

The War-lock project. It locks the US and UK into endless wars against various nebulous 'terrorist' foes, and usefully keeps the sheeple distracted whilst they are being fleeced.

poles indicate we're still heading for a labour-SNP coalition

1992

I have got to go on a foreign business trip on 07th May which will deprive me of my five year highlight of sitting up till 2 in the morning watching the results come in surrounded by colour coded charts and marker pens. Very disappointed.

You only stay up until 2? That's when the real action starts.

It depends how clear the result is going to be and if there are going to be any Michael Portillo moments.

Last time it was a bit depressing and it was horrible in 1992.

Got to love the Conservatives...

This one is from an old friend of mine, Dr Nick Palmer, who is standing under the Labour Party ticket again and concerns the Tory Armed Forces Minister Anna Soubry, he clearly wishes to remove from the seat.

In his round robin email (which I'm sure he won't mind me quoting) he says...

"Hustings galore

The next hustings are tomorrow Wednesday, on the subject of education. This one is at Chilwell School at 6.30pm to 8.15pm. Ms Soubry has decided not to attend this one.

The next day, it's the turn of the Beeston Express hustings, one of the largest last time. That one is at College House Junior School in the school hall, from 6.30 to 8.30. Ms Soubry isn't attending that one either, following her dissatisfaction with the previous Beeston debate last week, in which she felt the selection of questions was biased."

So, I ask you?

As she is still being paid her salary, should she not be wishing to make herself available to answer questions on either a narrow or wide range of topics, why should the voters think she would be the best candidate for the role for another 5 year period?

well her majority at the last election was only 390 so given how close the election is she better get her ass in gear and start showing up or she'll be an ex MP in a fortnight !
