Europe's oldest person, Venere Pizzinato, who was born into the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1896, has just gone at 114:

EDIT: Thinking about it another way, this means that one or two of the snotty little 14 year old brats running around now will still be here in that eerily distant year, 2111.

World's Oldest Woman passes away.

What another one? I hear you cry.

According to the article, her date of birth only became official once she became a Turkish citizen, earlier this year.

World's oldest twins turn 98.

My friend's gran and her twin sister turn 101 later this year. Plus, wikipedia has a list of twins who are 99 and over.

So they are not quite the world's oldest.

Maybe you should contact the BBC to let them know.

I think the Guinness Book of Records need to know. I will let my friend know, as its not really my place. :P

My friend's granny and great aunt now seem to be recognised as Britain's Oldest Twins.

They celebrated their 102nd birthdays two days ago:

Guinness still recognise the Welsh twins as the oldest in the world though...

That's resolved a bit of a puzzle. While I was doing a sweep of the entries to check whether any had snuffed it, I noticed the two pairs each with the "oldest" twins tag and pondered on whether the older set had actually died, but it's nice to see that their still alive. I will update their status, official or not, on the database...

EDIT - hold on, their not the twins on the database, so who the hell are they? What happend to the "other" oldest twins, Olive Tucker and Ivy Shermer? Are they dead? :scratchhead:

Olive Tucker and Ivy Shermer seem to have been forgotten about when Betty Richards and Jenny Pelmore took the title from them on the occassion of their 100th birthday back in January 2008. I have found no evidence of Olive or Ivy's death, and if they were still alive they would be Britain's oldest twins by about 6 months.

Unfortunately I can't search the register of deaths for England because the resource I use only goes as far as 2006.

I would assume one of them has probably died. They would likley have made the papers again for their 100th birthday in 2009, and their 101st and 102nd if they were both still living.

This and this would suggest that they are Britain's oldest twins (presuming there isn't an unknown set out there).

Mystery solved.

Are we to presume that one of or both of Ivy Shermer and Olive Tucker, former DDP picks, have died since 2007, when they were featured in the papers? They were both born in 1909 as well?

Probably they are dead like Trudi Endersby, but no-one has reported it, and now they've scrapped online death records, it's hard to check.

Its a good job I didn't contact Guiness then. :P

I've had a look thorough online obituaries but I can't see any mention of them there.

Ena Pugh and Lily Millward are now staking their claim as being the world's oldest twins, both hitting 102 the other day.

This couple have been married for 86 years: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-16441633

He is 106, she is 99. When you do the math it seems Mr Chand was a bit of a paedo in the early days...

Now then Windsor, I'm sure you know that even in the UK it was legal for girls to marry at the age of 12 as recently as 1929 (and much more recently in Ireland, sometime in the 1970s methinks).

In any case, paedophile describes those attracted to pre-pubescent children. The word you are looking for may be hebephile.

The article doesn't state where they were married, but as they were both born in the Punjab, it's quite possible that they were married there and came to the UK later in life. As I understand it, such young brides are not unusual in India, even today.

Hein

That's what I inferred from the article as well.

Indeed, that's why I said even in the UK. What I was getting at is that the minimum ages for consent and/or marriage are purely arbitrary, and differ from place to place. And marriage to a person who in some places would be below the legal age for marriage does not equal paedophilia. Windsor, I'm sure, knows this and I was just being a smartarse.

Having sex with children is bad, imho.

I agree, but what exactly is sex with children?

As Toast said so well:

[T]he minimum ages for consent and/or marriage are purely arbitrary, and differ from place to place. And marriage to a person who in some places would be below the legal age for marriage does not equal paedophilia.

This means that "Having sex with children" means different things for different people, according to their cultural background. Even in particular societies there are groups, often (but not exclusively) religious ones, who have different points of view.

It's a mistake to judge behaviour of people from a different culture by your own standards. I'm well aware that it's hardly possible to avoid that mistake, since often those are the only standards we know. It's the main reason why we find them so repulsive.

regards,

Hein

It was my attempt at humour...

Another thing to bear in mind: sexual contact does not necessarily follow immediately upon marriage - especially where arranged marriages are involved.
