Pierre Boulez, angry young man of serialism (now old).

 

Milton Babbitt, even older serialist and theorist.

 

Estonia's finest, Arvo Pärt.

 

A most excellent suggestion. Glass, Reich, Part and Boulez are all doing well at the moment, but there are others of similar vintage;

Barry Socher, who played in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s first violin section for 35 years, has died. He was 68.

 

The orchestra said that the recently retired musician died Saturday after a battle with cancer. Musical director Gustavo Dudamel dedicated Sunday’s Walt Disney Concert Hall matinee to Socher.

Virtuoso Hungarian pianist and conductor Zoltan Kocsis, celebrated for his thrilling and versatile technique, died on Sunday at the age of 64, his orchestra the National Philharmonic said.

Kocsis, musical director of the National Philharmonic since 1997, underwent heart surgery in 2012.

Last month he cancelled upcoming concerts on the advice of doctors, according to the National Philharmonic Orchestra.

Born in Budapest in 1952, Kocsis began performing abroad after winning the prestigious Hungarian Radio Beethoven Competition at the age of 18.
