maryportfuncity 10,017 Posted February 13, 2011 Have been trying to get some more inside track on Jim Perrin. He claimed in the publicity for his last book - West - that he had terminal lung-cancer. There's a scathing review of the book on its Amazon page from Jacsisters, in other words people related to his former partner whose death forms a large part of West. They say his claims were false, and his Wiki page says nothing. Jacsisters blog appears to have vanished from the web at the moment.

msc 17,762 Posted February 13, 2011 Anyone mentioned Michael Bond, author of Paddingon Bear, just turned 85... He was on a bus in the 1990s when he over heard two old ladies mentioning how he'd died years ago. Absolutely loved Paddington as a kid. He's happily retired with his wife last I heard. VSBfromH 74 Posted April 8, 2011 Craig Thomas The Cardiff-born Creator of "Firefox" - the book, not the web browser - has died aged 69. The book was made into a Hollywood "blockbuster" starring Clint Eastwood.
VSBfromH 74 Posted April 15, 2011 Arthur Marx Groucho's son, a pretty handy tennis player in his younger days as well as being a successful author, has died aged 89.
TAFKAG 70 Posted May 31, 2011 Hans Keilson about to become an overnight sensation with his second book, and conveniently aged 101. Conveniently for Newstreet Boys Death Squad, if less so for Hans, he's dead.
maryportfuncity 10,017 Posted June 1, 2011 We should maybe have a round up of the Beats (i.e. pre-hippy bohemians) still alive. Given their lifestyles the main lot pegged out ages back, Kerouac, Kesey, Ginsberg and even young pretenders like Richard Brautigan (suicide 1984). A latter day addition to their ranks, William (Dr Rat) Kotzwinkle is still going in his early seventies and creaming it with his best-selling kids books on Walter the Farting Dog. Well, Lawrence Ferlinghetti is still alive for one, 92 this year. One of those people I keep forgetting is still with us, not like a Beat poet to make his 90s! maryportfuncity 10,017 Posted June 1, 2011 Kotzwinkle has two years of birth 38 and 43, very alternative. I'd lay money on the earlier one being right, he was publishing in the late sixties and no youngster when The Fan Man and Dr Rat made him a cult hero. He's banked decent money on the back of the novel rights to E.T. and the Farting Dog books, so probably lives fairly well.

TAFKAG 70 Posted June 10, 2011 Someone who I think would make prime DL material, and who I'm amazed to see has barely been mentioned before is travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor... He made my DDP final 30, if it's any consolation. As did the unselected 92(allegedly)-year-old Egon Ronay, who has, as far as the search function indicates, never once been mentioned here. Patrick Leigh Fermor has died, thankfully chosen by me this time (damn and blast the other team that picked him). A most interesting chap.
Octopus of Odstock 1,859 Posted June 10, 2011 Patrick Leigh Fermor has died, thankfully chosen by me this time (damn and blast the other team that picked him). A most interesting chap. An inspiration to myself - I'm very sorry, but hardly surprised, to hear he has gone. His books were always hugely enjoyable and informative to read. Also, yet another DDP shortlisted chappie or chappess who has gone ahead of the lot I chose. Ye gads, it's a shocker of a year.
Magere Hein 1,397 Posted June 27, 2011 I might report this just as well in the Dead Dutch topic, but since he has an entry (a sloppy bit of work, btw) in Wikipedia, I'll do it here. Dutch author Heere Heeresma died yesterday, aged 79. As far as I know not much of his work has been translated in English, although his novel Een dagje naar het strand was made into a film, of which the screenplay was written by one of our favourites, Roman Polanski. regards, Hein

TAFKAG 70 Posted August 1, 2011 Yorkshiremen (and women), deserve a thread of their own. Also there are quite a lot who are approaching that time. Even Parkinson, the doyen of the lot, can't be that far off now. Geoff Boycott has had cancer I believe. Fred Trueman has gone quiet. Stan Barstow and Alan Silllitoe are just aboutb written up and Keith Waterhouse soon will be. Dickie Bird has simply lost it. Mollie Sugden has taken Thora Hird's mantle as next in line. http://ayup.co.uk/laugh/laugh0.html Have done enough for a while. Time that Godot pissed off again for a while. Sorry, but I had jobs to do and this was the only way of avoiding them. Eebagum, Stan Barstow's not feeling reet gradely, he's kicked t'bucket, lad.

Godot 148 Posted August 2, 2011 Just read the post above, since when was the late and great Alan Sillitoe a Yorkshireman? Oh all right, since never clever Dick. It's a long time ago since I read his autobiography but I had it in my head he was brought up in Sheffield. Anyway since it's the day after Yorkshire day I was wondering, did Yorkshire folk ever get their own thread? There's a few more famous Yorkshire folk than there are famous names from Cumbria which gave us the odd poet, a climber, a mad taxi driver and a horse that likes chips as far as I can see.
