2014 DDP Dumping Ground & Salvage Lot

Recommended Posts

This will get filled up more near or past January, but I've had to cut - at a self-imposed deadline a number of people - 76 potential picks down to 40 for the one-month-to-go-deadline.

So here's an alternate DDP entry list of 20 of those who I'm sure will either die but had to drop for tactical or obit doubt reasons, and others that I've just got a hunch that they'll survive***;

**** (if some of the below announce terminal cancer diagnoses or similiar in the next 4 weeks, I reserve the right to repick them)

I wonder how these 20 will end up comparing with the picked 20.

Mario Oriani-Ambrosini

Casey Kasem

Superstar Billy Graham

Ronnie Biggs

Naomi Thomas

Anto Finnegan

Clive Derby-Lewis

Chick WIllis

King Bhumibol

Lynda Bellingham

Clark Datchler

Robert Schuller

Bobby Heenan

Henry McCullough

Jimmy Hill

Adolfo Suarez

Joe McGinniss

Tony Dorsett

Terry Biddlecombe

Fernando Ricksen

I started out with about 40 and after reading your post decided to reduce it to 35 and slowly dump 5 a week , leaving me with about 10 days to maybe add any last minute additions and decide on my joker.

The 5 this week are :

stephen hawking

tito vilanova

vivian campbell

fidel castro

fats domino

Obviously like you said if one of these were to became seriously ill or at deaths door so to speak , I would probably add them back onto the list.

My "layout" so to speak is basically "longlist of people who are ill", "longlist of people who are old but not with major enough health issues", and the shortlist where I put the longlist names that really stick out so a lot of the types of names OoO brought up (ie the in their first year of MND ones) were never really in my contention per se.

Two of those guys in OoO's post are on my about 40-long shortlist currently though I really only see one of them possibly ending up in my final 20, the other feels more 2015-y. Superstar Graham was on the shortlist a few weeks ago but nicked him since then since he's in Zsa Zsa mode now afaic.

My cast-off list:

Sanford Bishop

Clark Datchler

Helen Fawkes

"Superstar" Billy Graham

Sandy Jardine

Sharon Jones

Ritchii Kara

Michael Parkinson

Robert Schuller

Sue Townsend

Tito Vilanova

Any of these guys might get back on the list if December wipes out Ray Price.

Whereas my list tends to be whittled down from a mega list of "mentioned on the forum", "known to be ill" and "getting on a bit" and "gosh are they still alive". Some of which comes to me seconds before sending the list away. Amusingly, three of the names on Odstock cast off list are on my final list radar.

I haven't started to lock in any names yet other then about 5-6 people who I thought probably wouldn't make it to 2014 like Sam Simon Wilko Johnson,Ray Price etc.I am guessing once I have my 20 locked in Jack Ramsay and Casey Kasem will probably be 2 of the last one's in or 2 of the last out. Ramsay I am about 80% certain of dying next year but because he coached in the 70's when the NBA had not become popular in the Us or globally even his Daily Mail obit chances are iffy. And with Kasem it's just a tossup of whether he is really on hist last days or if his family is just trying to gain an upper hand in court.

Similar to myself. Currently agonising about Kate Granger on the definites list, recent blogs suggest she's on the downward slope and the Daily Mail - at least - will record her death. Question is how far into 2014, or just beyond, will she go?

If what can be gathered from her chemo blog post i think she is has given up her chemo at least until after Christmas, when she said the chemo will have to wait for an answer. I feel she won't go back to the chemo and will die around april /may 2014.

Some "probably won't obit" picks I've crossed out:

  • Robert Genn - Canadian painter, the missus works in the arts department of a university and she'd never heard of him.
  • Joan Kirmer - Australian politician and not the one that used to be a man, so no chances of obits there
  • John Slim - not the minor royal, the Birmingham theatre critic. Big name in amdram apparently.

Also, there's always that desire to go for "interesting" picks, when you know deep down that you're safer with the mother of the shadow minister for agriculture as a pick than "the inventor of the Sodastream" or whatever.

Just realised my entire centerians list will be borderline/probably not on the obits. Damn there still famous, why do they need an obit as well?

Who would you take (only 1 of these 3) for next year:

W. Benitez- degenerative brain disease from boxing

J. McVie- undisclosed cancer

J. Prine- Lung cancer

All opinions welcomed.

According to his website Prine has rescheduled concerts in 2014 that he cancelled and his dr's caught his cancer at an early stage. Of the 3 he seems the safest bet to see out 2014 alive. Benitez and McVie are both wildcards and iffy picks at best but if I had to take one I would go with Benitez cause he has had strokes in the past and his disease will eventually get him and he has been in ill health over a decade and there has been no news on him at all since his last health scare in 2012 while McVie and the rest of Fleetwood Mac is performing in Las Vegas on New Years Eve.

Pan Breed did so badly in 2013, most of the current lot have been axed and a less esoteric policy undertaken. Only one survived into the 2014 list in fact, iirc.

One or two others did make into other pools like the Hartlepool Deadlypool or MPFC's Deathrace though.

I've decided to cut Jim Bamber from my team. Almost certainly he'll pass away in 2014, but I just don't think he'll get the obit, and by using the closest person similiar to him - Barry Foley who did the Catchpole cartoons as an example, he likely won't.

I've no doubt I'll regret it when the Telegraph proves me wrong but to be honest, Jim has a niche part in a niche sport which doesn't normally get obituaries at the best of times.

What's wrong with him? Cancer presumably...?

I'm pretty sure I would pass away sometime in 2014 too if I hadn't given up watching F1 back in early 2011. Perhaps I might already have done. But that's for different reasons (boredom).

Speaking of F1 people who are no longer on DDP lists, I had Sebastian Vettel on the earliest version of my entry, I just thought the irksome little puke has been so lucky that surely he must run out of luck some time soon, and thought maybe he'd pile into the rear of a dopy backmarker in early 2014 while trying to lap him. But then I realised that's a bit unlikely because over the last few years in this incredibly depressing little era we live in, every time you think "things can't possibly get worse, surely something will get interesting/good soon", you find it can and in fact will get worse, so I expect another 7 straight titles for the tedious tuetonic tit, who makes Andy Murray look charismatic (that is if we somehow manage to get through 7 more years without WW3 starting). And in 2014 I expect a mass suicide of the few 30,000 or so people who still actually bother to watch F1 every week, maybe about the time of the Spanish GP, when they finally get sick of hearing the Austrian national anthem, a piece of music so dreary and depressing, if Ian Curtis and Thom Yorke were in the same room and it came on the radio, even they would both shout "OH GOD WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?"

Im dropping J.L. Lewis from my team this year. He seems to be doing better, but he could just end up being another Zhuang Zedong for me. He does have some pretty serious cancer. Either way, Im not picking him. Im not sure of his obit chances either.

Carman, you mean?

He was dropped, like Jim Bamber as I don't think the obit's gonna be forthcoming.

Bamber could end up like Peter Arundell who only got a mention on the Autosports forums and a death notice on thisisannouncements.co.uk despite being mentioned in 3 other obituaries a month or so before he died on the BBC site.
