I appreciate there are other wrestlers in films, such as John Cena, Steve Austin, Kane, Rock, etc, etc, but there really is only one Hulk Hogan in terms of global recognition.

Heck, there are still rumours floating about that Hulk was paid millions of dollars not to run in the 2000 US presidential election because the security services thought he would win.

Obviously Hogan is not the most technical wrestler to ever live, and has never performed a drop-kick, etc, but in terms of marketability, he's number one.

Seriously, if you were to ask a random person on the street to name a wrestler (or American wrestler, if not in the US) then 9/10 at least would say "Hogan".

Just to add, according to Piper if the cancer had not been discovered he would have gone three to five years without knowing about it.

Hmmm....

Not the most likely to cark it this year then!

From: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...b=Entertainment

....Piper, 52, wasn't even supposed to be wrestling - he was expected to tour Quebec City, Montreal and selected southern Ontario cities by train to promote a WWE/VIA Rail partnership for Wrestlemania 23 next April in Detroit. But Piper was forced into extended ring duty at the world tag team championship at the Cyber Sunday pay-per-view event on Nov. 5.

There, in a unique promotion, fans voted the popular Piper into the match with Ric Flair - he earned 46 per cent of the votes, compared to Dusty Rhodes at 35 per cent and Sergeant Slaughter at 19.

That bout led him to the European gig, where he suffered the back ailment that led to the discovery of the cancer.

"If the fans hadn't voted me in (at Cyber Sunday), I wouldn't have discovered this," Piper said in a telephone interview from Portland, Ore. "I would have gone three to five years and never known it. And it's in my lymph glands, so it wouldn't have taken long to go through my entire body."

The cancer wasn't Piper's only problem. The surgery also revealed a damaged disc that threatened to end his career.

"This doctor put me on the slab, and it turned out, I had a bone about the size of a potato chip, and about that thin," said Piper. "And it was starting to cut the nerves inside my spine."

"It was just a matter of me moving too much one way or the other, and I would have been paralyzed."

Piper began undergoing radiation therapy immediately ("I glow in the dark now," he joked), and because the lymphoma was caught early, doctors say his chances for recovery are excellent.

"I've got a 30 per cent chance of (the radiation) not working," said Piper. "Well shoot, those are good odds to me." ....

Thanks everyone for all the comments on this year's DL. Lots of criticism for such an elderly list, then when we do pick someone relatively youthful we get accusations that he's not famous enough. Piper apparently hosted a celebrity wrestling show on UK TV in 2005 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/t...dio/4440957.stm, although I must confess I missed that one. Does anyone honestly think the likes of the Metro newspaper won't have a blurb about him if he dies?

I have to kiss ass a bit and agree with Cowboy Ronnie. Though I've expressed my disappointment at candidates like Ruby Muhammad and Tim Johnson for not meeting DL standards, I think RRP is one of the best choices on the list. He's ill, he's not elderly and if Laurel Hester got a mention in the British obits, then certainly Piper will. Sure, he might last another year or two, but as we can see from the thread so far, it's very lively and interesting, so what are we all complaining about?

I would imagine Piper would get a small obituary in the tabloids, to say he's completely unheard of in the UK is crazy, WWE did their legitimately biggest ever crowd over here in 1992, and Piper was there. They just did a sell-out tour of all the major arenas in the UK, and Piper was there until they sent him home injured. The likes of Yokozuna, Chris Adams etc have had obits in the UK press, Davey Boy Smith got quite a bit of coverage when he died.

To be fair, if it is a quiet news day he'll get in.

Either way, as CP as said I can imagine this thread becoming somewhat interesting.

As for the legitimately biggest crowd in 1992 - it was given as 80,000 or so at Wembley but with all the seats taken and seats on the pitch, I honestly believe it was more like 100,000 - but they didn't want to beat the fake crowd for Wrestlemania III (where my avatar is from) so they knocked it down.

Roddy Piper was also the main character in the cheesy 1988 film They Live, which included the classic line - "I have come here to kick ass and chew bubble gum... and I'm all out of bubble gum."

He's been in at least 20 movies and tv shows as well (guest appearances on Highlander, Silk Stalkings, Zorro, The Outer Limits, Robocop, and Walker, Texas Ranger). He was even cartoonized in the 80's in Hulk Hogan's Rockin' Wrestling.

I would welcome all wrestlers to d/l, to call it acting is an insult to all actors and to call it a sport is just wrong. How do we know that this illness is real, it could be just a made up story to sell tickets to the morons that watch it.

From Roddy's site:

An Early Christmas for Roddy and Thanks to the Fans!

Roddy has Wrestling and the Fans to thank for an early Christmas present this year. After returning to the WWE and the Fans voting him in on Cyber Sunday to wrestle, Ric Flair and Rowdy Roddy Piper became the World Tag Team Champions. Roddy then continued on tour with the WWE in the UK. While there he suffered a back injury and had to leave the tour early, resulting in emergency back surgery upon arrival home in Portland, Oregon.

While performing the surgery, the surgeon took a biopsy of a suspicious lymphnode. While Roddy has been recovering from the surgery on his back he has been waiting and undergoing further tests regarding the biopsy. Initial findings were that he has lymphoma cancer, (non-hodgkins).

Today he got final results from all the tests and knows that he has low grade lymphoma cancer in one maybe two marble size areas near each other, behind his stomache. Due to the back surgery and the Doctor noticing the cancer it has been caught at an early stage. Roddy will undergo 4 weeks of radiation treatment.

Roddy has always stated that his career in wrestling and his success has been given to him by the FANS. Now again with this sequence of events; going back to the WWE, The FANS voting him to wrestle, the injury to his back, resulting in the Doctor finding his cancer early. Has again strengthened his feelings that Wrestling and the Fans have had a positive outcome in his success not only in his career but in his life!

Seems he might not be fighting his final match just yet :(

A Post from Roddy

I have been sincerely overwhelmed with the support from unbelievably kind people. Many who have explained to me that themselves or someone personal to them has gone through the treatment for cancer. I would like to thank all of you for the cards and gifts you have sent. Picture collages, wine baskets (which really helps my healing), prayer chains, and many other gifts you have sent, have all meant so much.

Many times have I gone to a hospital that dealt with children who had some form of cancer. As I was finished visiting with them and walking out of the hospital, I had hoped that maybe I had done some good and I always said to whoever was with me that those are the most courageous kids that I know. Now being in the middle of the process myself and looking back at those kids, I didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. Those kids now, are my Heros. Some of them staying months and years undergoing similar therapy and more to what I am receiving. I don’t know how those kids could smile at all. I guess the easiest way for me to sum it up is, you would have to walk a mile in their shoes to understand.

Ever Forward,

Roddy

No mention of his Death List Nomination

Hello

Possibly a bit early in proceedings for my annual post, but I've just been reminiscing about Roddy's finest film moment when he starred in a terrific post-nuclear trash film "Hell come to Frogtown" in which (I think) he had to rescue unsullied vestal virgins and return them intact in order to save the future of mankind.

I cannot believe there was never a sequel. Maybe now he'll get one made.

I think some pay per view is out about Piper, seems to be a 'The best of Roddy Roddy Piper' type of scene. It is possible that it was done to have him recognized but I still have doubt relating to his demise. But what the hell, the money is on him rather then Senator Tim Johnson.

Actually, Piper's been in quite a few fillms, including John Carpenter's They Live. He's currently filming a new movie for MTV, and recovering from his treatment. He was diagnosed early, and it was probably caught in time for him to make a full recovery.

What I don't get about Piper appearing is it takes several years to die from Lyphoma if you die. I don't know many who were diagnosed, besides Joey Ramone who probably lived for seven years or so with it.

I found a nice white feather on my lawn this afternoon. Interesting, isn't it? Apologies if you were expecting a post about Rowdy Roddy Piper; you probably haven't heard the news. There are no topics anymore.

Thanks to action by Notapotato, the subjects of threads are now a moot point. You can say anything, anywhere, anytime and if he doesn't like it, he'll sort it out later. But, until he does, just chill out and vent your spleen wherever you f*****g well like.

That's the spirit! Now we're well off-topic. Or are we? Would Rowdy Roddy Piper actually be glad that people are rowing in his thread? Does this thread now belong in the Irony thread? Should all threads just be merged into one big one? Let's have a debate about it. Anywhere you like!
