What Are You Giving Up For Lent?

Recommended Posts

I gave up Lent for Lent. I have been 100% successful at something for the first time in my life.

I've never done a Lent denial thing before but I gave up all sweets (candy, pie, cookies, cake, ice cream). I wonder if I'll make it?

It's Good Friday and I haven't partaken in any sweets. Only a day and a half to go. To be completely honest, I don't love sweets so it hasn't been too difficult.

Well come on now, surely the point is to give up something that tempts you? In that case, I declare that I gave up mushrooms and felching for Lent, and have been jolly successful.

Well in that case, I gave up toadstools and fletching.

It's not that hard if you try not to think about it.

I've had pies. I am ashamed.

With or without gravy?

It's that time again. Pancakes tomorrow.

I've been wondering what to give up for Lent this year. Ginster's Cornish pasties came close but there's one in the fridge and I have a long drive tomorrow.

I think it's going to be wine and horseradish.

Welcome back Godot :( Thanks for reminding me about the pancakes, must make some tomorrow, on a cooking binge at the moment as I am off work for a few days, any suggestions for more fillings or indeed any recipes (you know where the kitchen thread is) would be welcome  .

As for Lent, I'm claiming to be Presbyterian for that, we don't do Lent seemingly, nobody told me that as a child when I was forced to attend Church of Scotland Sunday School, but I had to give up sweets for Lent every year because my mother was Episcopalian. I'm sure I've paid my dues. No sweets* for nearly 7 weeks every year as a child must surely exonerate me from giving up the few pleasures in life I have now  .

*It wasn't just sweets - cakes, biscuits, jams, marmalades and puddings were included in this, it really was anything sweet.

Many years ago at St. John's C of E Infant School, there were two types of biscuits available; Jammie Dodgers and chocolate digestives. It was the 'done thing' to give up 1 of your daily Jammie Dodgers for Lent (only the posh kids could afford the choccie digestives), donating the (old) penny to whichever charity had been selected (missionaries in Africa or summat). So, thats what I'll do this year (apart from donating the old penny, obviously).

Handshakes for me again. I quite look forward to my annual bamboozling of sales people and suited office types.

It's nice to be back LG. Sadly the long drive today buggered up any chance of a pancake. :( The last one was in the pan when I walked through the door, and no-one felt charitable. So I had to settle for a Ginster's on the motorway. I'm not religious but it doesn't harm to borrow the idea. Besides it's something to do (or not to do) at a dull time of year. I'm a Yorkshireman but it doesn't stop me having haggis and whisky on Burns Night. I'd have a kilt too if they weren't so damned expensive. Anyway, I've made the pledge: no wine, Ginsters or Marmite soldiers (to dip in the chucky) until Easter.

There's still time. Since I do fuck all I'm not sure what to give up. Think I'm going to try and give up sitting on my arse - not easy.

Time was when you could post on this site and get a response without it being some fucking fucked up guest. That time has passed. Time was when there was a bit of banter and conversation rather than some fuckwit posting yet another obscure death dragged off Wikipedia. Time was that a death on the list was written up the same day. Without the DDP this place would be as dead as some brilliant simile on deadness. Sadly it is going the way of the red Telephone box, discotheques and Blue Peter. There was a time you could come here to learn how to make a ray gun from a squeezy bottle and sticky-backed plastic. Not any more.

I plan to give up procrastination next Lent.

Ah, there is still life as we used to know it but it's fading like the big red eye in Hal's brain - "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do................

To labour the point, how can Deathlist or Blue Peter compete with this easy-to-make

? The world has moved on. It's not the site's fault. People just aren't dying like they used to. Look at Robin Gibb. I think we have to start facing reality - death has become unfashionable.

Maybe people have given it up for Lent.

Oh yeah, I've tried this but it's not that much fun. There's just not enough people to piss off in a home office but it's been nice to give up answering the phone, door, wife etc. I've taken to photographing ladybirds.
