The Ones That Got Away...

Recommended Posts

I always wondered whether there would be much UK obituaries for the heroes of Easy Company - so did the Pale Horseman, it seems, for the DDP but he went for it - and with good reason too... Ed Mauser, their joker has died & I think the below is a valid link;

Retired escapologist's assistant Dorothy Young celebrates her 103rd birthday today. She is the last survivor of Harry Houdini's touring show, which came to an abrupt end when Houdini died of peritonitis in 1926. Here's some grainy
taken of Mrs Young at the "2008 Official Harry Houdini Seance".

She doesnt need a seance to meet Harry anymore.. http://www.drew.edu/news/2011/03/21/drew-a...n-passes-at-103

Keeping on topic, The Sun have just done an interview with Rochus Misch, the last survivor of Hitler's bunker.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman...icle2158743.ece

Misch is looking absolutely fit as a fiddle on the BBC today. Sprightly and lucid as a 92 year old deadpool candidate oughtn't to be.

There's another 10 years in him at least, barring assassination or accident.

An ailing Rochus Misch has given his last interview to the press.

Now 93, housebound and terminally ill, Misch says: “This is definitely going to be my last appointment with the press. I would now like to die in peace
.”

Have just been watching the Band of Brothers series again, that, apart from portraying the Brits as blithering idiots or in minor support roles and sometimes both, is one of the best pieces of war drama ever made. I was looking up Easy Company on Wiki and there are quite a few still left alive. I think Richard Winters would get a UK obit.

The living ones I could find at first glance, ordered by birth. I'm not going to go in depth, this is just what I saw from the Wiki article for Band of Brothers. Anyone who has more can expand.

Frank Perconte (b. March 10 1917)

Richard Winters (b. January 21 1918)

Joseph A. Lesniewski (b. August 29 1920)

Lynn "Buck" Compton (b. December 31, 1921)

Donald Malarkey (b. 1921)

William Guarnere (b. April 28 1922)

Edward Heffron (b. May 16, 1923)

Darrell "Shifty" Powers (b. 1923)

Lynn Compton RIP http://www.militaryg...-brothers-h-r30

There are four survivors of the San Francisco earthquake still breathing and they got worldwide news coverage when they came together this week. So when we're down to one s/he might be a shoo-in pick for a few dead pool points.

With the death of Sally Ride, only eight people mentioned in the lyrics to "We Didn't Start the Fire" are still alive: Queen Elizabeth II, Brigitte Bardot, Fidel Castro, Chubby Checker, Bob Dylan, John Glenn, Doris Day and Bernie Goetz.

I'd guess that at least five of those are gonna outlive Billy Joel.

Billy Joel is a hopeless alkie.

What you mean he stays sober for long periods of time and had incredible will power.

I would go with 3 (QEII, BB & Mr Zimmermann). I will freely admit that I have no idea who Bernard Goetz is.

Subway vigilante of justice/racist nutjob (delete as applicable) who shot four black guys who tried to mug him/begged for change back in the early 80s.

Looking through Wikipedia for old American politicians, I took an interest in surviving members of presidential cabinets. The last member of the Kennedy administration died in 2010, but there are still a few members of the Johnson and Nixon administrations kicking around.

Johnson (1963 - 1969)

Attorney General (1967 - 1969) - Ramsey Clark (Born. 1927) (Currently employed by dictators on trial)

Postmaster General (1968 - 1969) - W. Marvin Watson (Born. 1924)

Secretary of Transportation (1967 - 1969) - Alan Stephenson Boyd (Born. 1922) (The first Transportation Secretary ever)

Nixon (1969 - 1974)

Secretary of State (1969 - 1977) - Henry Kissinger (Born. 1923)

Secretary of the Treasury (1972 - 1974) & Secretary of Labor (1969 - 1970) - George P. Shultz (Born. 1920) (Also Reagan's Secretary of State)

Secretary of Defense (1969 - 1973) - Melvin R. Laird (Born. 1922)

Secretary of Defense (1974 - 1975) - James R. Schlesinger (Born. 1929)

Secretary of Commerce (1972 - 1973) - Peter G. Peterson (Born. 1926)

Secretary of Commerce (1973 - 1975) - Frederick B. Dent (Born. 1922)

All of them would, or at least be acknowledged. US cabinet members are a very safe bet

The last survivor of a band of 50 who escaped Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942 died today. August Kowalczyk was one of nine who actually got away. The others were gunned down or recaptured. He was 90 years old and died in Oswiecim, the Polish name for Auschwitz.

Ruth Klein, the last surviving member of The Pancea Society, died in August.

The Pancea Society were a wonderfully eccentric religious group, who believed that Christ's second coming would happen in Bedford. One of the properties they purchased in the town remains empty, ready in waiting for Jesus to take up the tenancy upon his return.
