Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

He was lawyer for the family of Salazar's chief opponent after the guy was murdered by the dictator's secret police, a prominent anti-fascist prisoner after, and after release and exile, became a two time PM of his country, and decade long President. (Which is a much more powerful position in Portugal as it gives you defence and foreign affairs briefs to control.) He's Santiago Carrilo with less actual fighting and killing people and more power. He'll piss an QO in his sleep imo.

With confirmation awaiting on Sir Dudley Smith (see the "announced on Wiki" thread), a quick look back at the living MPs from the 1955 and 1959 elections.

1955:

  • James Ramsden (1930) – Tory
  • Lord Balniel (1927) – Tory
  • John Eden (1925) – Tory
  • Sir Richard Body (1927) – Tory
  • Thomas Mitchell (1931) – Sinn Fein (his being alive is disputed, iirc)

1959

  • Timothy Kitson (1931), Tory
  • Stratton Mills (1932), Alliance Party of Northern Ireland
  • John Morris, Lord Morris of Aberavon (1931), Labour
  • James Ramsden (1923), Tory – Last man to be Secretary for War.
  • Sir Peter Tapsell (1930) – Tory
  • Alan Thompson (1924) – Labour
  • Sir John Wells (1925) – Tory
  • Lord Balniel (1927) – Tory
  • Clive Bossom (1918) – Tory
  • Edward du Cann (1924) – Tory
  • John Eden (1925) – Tory
  • John Hollingworth (1930) – Tory
  • Sir Dudley Smith (1926-2016?)

Denis Healey was the last 1951 survivor. Going off an early list from the Labour History Group in 2013, so anyone missing is their fault, not mine!

Tom Mitchell is definitely still alive.

There is no longer any ambiguity of former members being alive/maybe alive now that the UK Parliament have a list of living former MPs that is updated and republished every 6 months or so. Anyone can download it.

http://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/SN05324

You're welcome :)

Yes, I'm aware of that, I've used it at work before. The thing about Tom Mitchell is that the above list is chiefly kept up to date by keeping note of Parliamentary pensions, and as Mitchell was expelled, he was never eligible for one, and he dropped off the radar and is rarely seen, even by old colleagues. He did show up at a funeral in 2013 on a look around though, so he's probably still about.

George Perry was listed as alive by the 2014 copy of the Research Briefing. It then turned out he'd died in 1998!

Edwin Edwards, 88, lovably corrupt former governor of Louisiana hospitalised with pneunomia. But they expect him to recover:

Hospitalised with pneunomia again. This time the wife isn't sure when he will be released:

There's some misquotes in there I think. Our local Loozeeann media had her saying he was already feeling ok by the time it hit the media, but he was feeling poorly the few days prior. And planped on spending another couple days for observation. I have him on a DDP theme team so I would orefer him dead--but he ain't going anywhere for now.

Mario Soares is feeling better and had a good improvement yesterday. It seems he will be out of intensive therapy in a few days. All good for the old man!

And now sweepstakes! I take December the 19th.

Former Uruguay president (and beloved dictator) Gregorio "Goyo" Alvarez is on ventilator suffering from heart failure. He was reported to be dead yesterday, but it turned out he is alive and in critical conditions. He has been in hospital for months, but his conditions took a turn for the worst two days ago.

Well, it would be weird if they both survive! I guess at least one of them will be dead by the end of the week.

It seems Mario Soares could really make it as his condition improves constantly. There's still life in the old man.

Former Indianapolis mayor William Hudnut III has died aged 84. http://www.dailyprogress.com/former-indianapolis-mayor-william-hudnut-dies-at/article_f5c49f8c-ed6a-5f9d-ab7f-2319cc48e1f3.html

Mentioned because he was a pick in various pools.

He was one of the very last cuts from my DDP team - can't believe he lasted as long as he did, frankly. Shifted him out in the final couple days for Chocolate Armenteros. Now I'll be curious to see if being the longest-serving mayor of Indianapolis, not to mention being pivotal toward making it a noted US sports hub, can get him a Mail obit.

I note that the former leader of Guatemala Oscar Azurdia, who was listed as being still alive at 99 (and the 4th oldest ex world leader) is now listed by Wikipedia as having died in 1995 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%93scar_Mendoza_Azurdia. I cant find anything to verify it but there's no reason to think it isn't true I g uess

And he did get one.

Paul "Stabber" Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, has bowel cancer which has spread to his lungs and liver.

I'm not sure if he'd get the right obit, but he seems like an interesting character. His nickname originates from an incident in 1993, when he was charged with murdering a burglar.
