I saw Ranulph Fiennes in the Okehampton branch of Waitrose a few months ago, with a huge amount of sugar in his trolley  . Perhaps he was planning to make a job lot of jam to sustain him through his epic trek in to the cold and the dark.

Fiennes pulls out of trans-antarctic trek because of severe frostbite.

He plans to participate in the Sahara ultra-marathon:

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/mar/06/sir-ranulph-fiennes-sahara-marathon-des-sables

He would not be the oldest person to successfully participate, but the article mentions his "fragile health, two heart attacks, diabetes and a cancer operation".

He's probably more likely to get killed by Boko Haram the way things are going over there.

Of course we don't mention that because it's haram...

I suppose heatstroke will make a pleasant change from frostbite.

According to reports today he has been overtaking people who are almost 50 years younger than him.

He's completed the run, despite 'heart problems caused by physical exertion' and 'back pain'. 159 miles in six days.

Shoehorned into this thread, but...

30-year old Luke Robertson, who is a big fan of Sir Ranulph Fiennes, wants to travel to the South Pole next week unaided by anyone or anything and plans on getting there around Christmas (so not necessarily one for 2016):

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-34880063

He made the decision after surgery on his brain and apparently has a pacemaker in his chest.

He'll tweet of his progress.

I guess we'll be waiting for a tweet like "I am just going outside and may be some time."

Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham- Fiennes, 3rd Baronet on Morning Live on the BBC this morning.

Shaking like a leaf - not nerves.

All his marbles - well, as many as any inbred aristo...:P
