Quite a big news story is unfolding... The French-Jewish head of the International Monetary Fund, who is also a prospective presidential opponent to Sarkozy, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, has been arrested just before his flight home took off from NY. He had allegedly raped a hotel chambermaid an hour previously...

"The married former French finance minister is also considered a possible Socialist candidate for the presidency.

The BBC's Hugh Schofield, in Paris, says Mr Strauss-Kahn has been riding high in the polls and was seen as having a genuine chance of beating President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Martine Aubry, leader of France's Socialist Party, described news of his arrest as a "thunderbolt" which left her "astounded"."

Head of the IMF, a socialist?

Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

Mademoiselle Marine Le Pen must be grinning from ear to ear this morning since:

a.) her main political rival just destroyed himself ;)
b.) said rival is a Jew :P ;) :P

Here is an extract from an article:

"Far-right leader Marine Le Pen said her rival's presidential hopes had been crushed. Strauss-Kahn and Le Pen have led recent opinion polls ahead of conservative president Nicolas Sarkozy, even though he was yet to declare his candidacy.

"The case and the charges ... mark the end of his campaign and pre-campaign for the presidency and will most likely prompt the IMF to ask him to leave his post," National Front leader Le Pen told i-Tele television."

There is a small chance we could see the return of Vichy France. :o

Meanwhile, Sif Ruud has rudely departed at the age of 95. She was the star of a number of Ingmar Bergman films including It Rains on Our Love, Wild Strawberries and The Magician, so this is a big loss for the world of non-English language cinema: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sif_Ruud
