Not Really Famous, But What A Moniker!

Recommended Posts

Anybody watch "Who do you think you are?" with Rory Bremner last night? He went to a community archivist to get information on his great grandfaher's death. She went by the wondeful name of "Di Stiff"!!! (I've checked and she can be googled - they didn't make it up!)

I started watching it, watched 20 minutes & found myself utterly bored & sleepy. When they get the right person & the right history (Boris Johnson.. and amazingly, David Dickinson), this is excellent TV. When it's not (Ainsley Harriot & last night), it's crap.

However the smouldering Fiona Bruce should entertain for at least a little while longer, one hopes, but the previews don't sound as promising as before. Only 5 as well.. maybe they're losing steam?

I love that programme - genealogy is one of my hobbies.

The BBC research the entire family tree and use the best bits - so Rory's tree must have been dreadfully boring.

Mind you, his ancestors were certainly grand people. Should I ever become a celebrity, I'm sure you'd all be enthralled by by great-grandfather's record during WW1. He seems to have survived by getting drunk, and ending up in prison whilst his comrades were being blown to bits.

Now thats good television...

I love it too and it's one of the few programmes I watch, I'd forgotten it was on last night and VSB's post reminded me, so I watched it online through the BBC website this evening. I thoroughly enjoyed it, found it fascinating, especially the stuff about his father in WWII (first 20 minutes, sorry OoO!). I've found most of them interesting, for me perhaps Stephen Fry's was the most interesting, he found a plaque on a house in Vienna that was dedicated to the memory of the people who lived there, it named his family who almost all died in Auschwitz, I realise he would have expected to find evidence of the Holocaust in his family as they were Eastern European Jews, but I'm sure it didn't make it any easier for him when he saw such a poignant reminder. Julian Clary's was good too, he said his mother had slagged off his father all her life for having German ancestors and then he researched her and found out she was descended from Germans too!

Damnit, the image has been removed.

Anyway, it was a story about a family that called their newborn son "Drew Peacock"

The dad was distraught wheen he finally realised what he'd done, when typing his kids name into google, and it suggested an alternative spelling of "Droopy Cock".

His dad said it was one of those head slap "D'oh!" moments.

I suspect it wasn't his first, and definitely won't be his last.

Cyril Freezer. "A leading light in model railways for six decades", (not a big fish in a small pond really, more like a whale in a puddle) has died at an undefined but advanced age.

I must say I was rather taken with some of tributes made to him on the Model Railway Enthusiasts forum.

A man who also effectively kick-started P4 by provoking the North London Group into building Heckmondwike. RIP, a great loss to the hobby.

What on earth does that actually mean?

Very Sad news - Cyril's name has been associated with model railways for so long. My copy of "track plans" dating from 1972 is very well worn, and plan 18, simplified Exeter Central (minus the hidden loops) formed the basis of my loft layout from around 1973 until 2002 when I could no longer manage the loft ladders.

I get the feeling the author of that post might not have led a terribly active social life.

I worked with a guy called Richard Feast - but everyone called him Dick. I couldn't keep a straight face or is it only me that finds that funny.

Excellent work, Buster go to the top of the class.

I count at least seven errors, a question mark terminating a sentence that isn't a question, and there isn't one on the sentence that is.

You might be surprised to learn that Thais are also Oriental.

I don't consider Irish Rugby League players famous so Wayne Kerr qualifies in my book!

Baseball star Woodie Held has died. I expect he was popular with the ladies.

Shall I be predictable and say I've held a few woodies in my time? Or shall I surprise you all and keep my gob shut? :ghost3:

I don't mean to come across as a dirty minded bastard, but is that the oral sex smilie you're using there Lardy?
