Dom Mintoff

Recommended Posts

against the bristish to form an independent Republic of Malta,

You obviously hate us so much you couldn't resist pounding the keyboard when you tried to type British.

Anyway from the Wiki entry for Malta

After the war, the islands were given self-rule, with the Maltese Labour Party (MLP) of Dom Mintoff favouring closer integration with Britain, and the Nationalist Party (PN) of Dr George Borg Olivier favouring further independence.

So now the best way of having "huge balls" against the British is to want to join the UK.

Anyway.

He is a health freak which means, I suppose, he still has a year or two left at least.

well questy it's a bit difficult, i guess you are British... so obviously you don't know the maltese history in detail independently of what the wiki says... i'm not blaming you for this coz obviously its not your country

That was just a strategic political move from a very wise man....

(malta was divided by those wanting to join italy and those wanting to join GB)

he first wanted integration to get funds from GB, but this was just a move to get further more independence...as he knew it was not feasable for GB to continue financing Malta, they would just be throwing away money, this scared the Empire more and more... coz if Malta had to join GB... all that was of Britain had to be of Malta, as it would have been completely integrated with GB... this made the brits think and conclude that it's better to give independence to Malta than to have itnegration and maintain it...

anyways there are many details and to point them all out its too time consuming/....

all this to show what a great politician he was... more over, they don't refer to him as a politician but as a real statesman!

well yes i don't have much sympathy with brits or the idea of joining britain back than as i am mediterranean, more close to our neighbours italy in all senses... temperament, culture, ways of doing and all.... all is different.... so besides yes of wanting independence as everyone i guess.... brits don't get much of my Sympathy... although i do respect them and say that they did right things over here, besides using Malta as a Base.

Mintoff is the man who will remain remembered for making Malta a truely independent nation. He is the one who wanted the maltese to run their country themselves, building up a nation from a poor one, to one with it's own social welfare. George Borg Olivier is another person, who had deep patriotic interests, that during his time of office, he aqcuired for our country, what was possible to acquire at that time. In my opinion they both deserve high praise.

On the other hand, present politicians of both sides, will be remembered of not being able to run the country themselves, but to hand over its managment to the EU. We are now seeing europeans buying property in Malta, causing property prices to rise higher and higher, reaching unreachable prices for maltese with average income. We will also see a decline in social services, as one of the main concepts of the EU is that it's member countries would not be welfare states. We will also be seeing foreigners taking the jobs of the maltese people.

The truth sometimes hurts

Mintoff was a communist pig. He brought Malta to the brink of civil war, by encouraging or allowing the police to commit violent crimes against opposition supporters.

His 'friendship' with Libya and North Korea was dangerous and made Malta a pariah state. All this because he had a PERSONAL grudge against Britain and the US.

The most corrupt Prime minister ever. He will remain a stain on Malta,s history.

Is this Dom Mittensoff any relation to Dom Perignon?

He brought Malta to the brink of civil war

How - exactly - does an island nineteen miles long by, at the narrowest, less than two miles wide stage a civil war? I mean, if the artillary got too long on their range they'd be lobbing shells into the sea.

I've jogged the width of Malta at one go. It's not that special an achievement, I could see one coast when I set off from the other one.

Ever hear of The Hatfields and McCoys?

Okay let me explain it thusly since you seem to be at something of a loss which may have more to do with the impending storm approaching from nearby than it does with Duncan Yo-yos. You see these two other wise happy familys had problems with each other and hated each others guts and killed each other off for years and years and years and even some more years. They didnt need a lot of space. All you need for a civil war is a handfull of persons from each side who are against the other side and there you have it a shot gets fired or a sword cuts off a head and kaplow! all out war has begun itself. Can be over in a flash or take hunderds of years depending on how many people are still alive.

Aye point taken, I was being somewhat flippant anyway. For your Hatfields and McCoy's others might substitute the Have and Have Nots. We Cumbrians tend to divide between forward thinkers and traditionalists, usually defined in the differences between those who fancy other girls more than they fancy their own sisters.

Malta is still small though isn't it?

Small but oddly I have known two people (unrelated to me or each other) from there. Strange.

Now you come to mention it I've met and worked with a few Maltese as well, three or four, can't remember for sure if one of them was from Gibraltar or Malta. Maybe explicable by the lack of opportunities outside tourism and small local industries back home.

MINTOOF IS MALTA'S LEADING EX STATESMAN

Since the drive-by ranter responsible for the above post seems long departed could anyone out there enlighten the rest of us as to the competition faced by Mintoff in this department?

WHY is Mintoff on here and Anthony Mamo not? Mamo is 96 years old, the oldest living head of state in the world, plus Mintoff has been active as recently as 2003 in Maltese politics.

Guest 80s education victim

from my point of view he has to be interpreted from two points of views. First he fought the corrupted church and he did well becasue the Church left most of the people in the dark. But then he entered in the Church's shoes shoes. during the 80s especially those of my age (from 32 to 40) still remember those terrible days of going to school with fear. yes i agree was a dictator and that was his destruction because most people in Malta do not want to hear the word MLP.

Seems like MLP then is the new punchline to an old joke.

Mintoff was many different thing to many different people, but what can't be denied is his huge impact on Malta's history.

For good or ill he shaped modern Malta, few political figures have had as big an impact on their nation as Mintoff has.

"Malta marida mediċina Mintoff", That kind of slogan would never work in the UK, we'd rather just have a cup of tea and a good moan.

S'cuse the cynicism but sure it's easier to have a big impact on an entire nation that measures 19 miles by 2 than it is on - like - a proper country.

Not that I want to be controversial or owt.

If we leave the question what exactly the size of a proper country ought to be aside, the above sentiment never stopped ambitious politicians, like Mussolini, Thatcher or GWB, trying. Some succeeded.

Hein
