Cliff Michelmore

Cliff Michelmore is one of the best tv presenters the BBC ever had. Panorama's editors wanted him; Donald Baverstock, founder of Tonight, had a prior claim and wouldn't let him go. He was one of the nicest men in the business and I hope he lives for ever.

Charles, like hell you're the real thick haired veteran correspondent. Incidentally, if Cliff did live forever don't you think there'd come a point when the pain in his 200 year old knee joints would become intolerable?

This is class!, Cliff in action from 1960 on a clip about the way Newquay is becoming a home for scruffy undesirables. Man, he was old then, he's old now and people still have the same worries about Newquay.

Nowt changes, or summat.

Does anyone know anything about his current health? For such a famous face from the past he seems to have dropped well out of sight. He seems to be taking us on, betting our interest will die of apathy before he dies.

he is very fine thanks. i am currently dating his grand daughter and he is in good health.

How are his internet studies coming along? We would love to have him as a forum member, he would be made most welcome.

He turned up in a documentary on the history of childrens television last night. Obviously frail, but equally obviously in full possession of his marbles.

Former BBC and Southern TV Presenter Cliff Michelmore is going on towards 91. Not a bad olde age for an olde newscaster

Must be all that preservative in suntan lotion in the 1970's and 1980's.....

You mean you watched the documentary about the documentary he presented in 1963 about the terrible winter of 63 which formed part of a documentary ....or summat.

Confused? You soon will be. If it hadnt been in black and white we would have thought they were on about now, we still cant fuggin cope 50 years later!

Are you saying that current presenters are less authorative, less respected, less trusted and lack gravitas or summat?

If you are, I think you are right.

I'd prefer more like Mark Austin to more like Trevor McDonald.

I think Cliff would have been a better inclusion in the list than either Nicholas Parsons or Peter O' Toole.

Cliff Michelmore is easily remembered by anyone who watched TV in the late 1950's to the 1980's compared to the serious 'we know it all so listen' Cliff had a great style often lacking in todays presenters - particularly of current affairs programmes and unlike many he put over even the most serious issues with genuine humanity . If he made a slip on air he was as much likely to emphasise it as try to bluff it out - a true professional but with a heart. In the 1960's on 'Tonight' (BBC TV) even an easily bored teen-ager like me found his presentation interesting and he linked the items and introduced guests in way as to actually make one wish the programme was longer - at a time many other such programmes only inspired yawns. He was later a 'gift' to the 'Holiday' with his very honest comments on resorts and package deals. No, Mr Michelmore doesn't deserve to be on this rather sick forum, albeit tongue in cheek. He should rather be on a 'Hope They Live Forever' Forum. God bless you Mr Michelmore may the studio lights never fade and the microphone be forever live for you.

On every other forum they have forgotten who he is (was).

Here we keep the memory alive until the day of passing comes.

When I was in the pub trade in the 70s I heard he was banned from most pubs in Reigate because he was an obnoxious drunk! Can this be true?

Don't click on any of the links. We're deleting them as quickly as possible.

If it were possible for people to live forever then you can include him on such a forum.Since death is inevitable for everyone good or bad we might as well deal with the real world.

From a fb friend today:

Turning into my lane this afternoon, had to swerve to avoid an old man in the middle of the road with a walking frame....good job I missed him, would have been awful to have driven over a national treasure...Cliff Michelmore!
