DEATHRACE 2012: THE RULES

1 – The object of the Deathrace is to be the first contestant to reach 2012 points.

2 – To enter the Deathrace a contestant must have

A: A valid and current DDP team or a Deathrace Dirty Dozen team.

B: Status as a member of the Deathlist (i.e. be at least a Pointless Ranter and at most a Dedicated Cumbrian Corpse Hound, or Summat)

Or…..successfully argue a case to MPFC for entry without the above.

3 – Entries are open until midnight on 31 December. A team will be deemed to have entered when they post a full DDP team and the name of their DDP team on the Deathrace thread on the Deathlist.

Or

A special ‘Deathrace Dirty Dozen’ (DDD) line-up concocted specifically for the Deathrace comprising 12 members conspicuous as ‘low hanging fruit’ of the variety beloved of dead poolers. Including one of the Dirty Dozen nominated as a joker and a suitable grimly funny team name for the DDD

4 – Players score points every time a team member dies and accrues an obit (see point 9). The score for each death amounts to 1 point for every complete calendar day of 2012 remaining after the death of said team member. So, a death on January 1st scores 365 points, a death on January 2nd scores 364 points etc.

5 – Each team must include a joker. Jokers score double the normal points in point 4 above. Players entering a DDP team are not obliged to retain their DDP selection of joker for Deathrace purposes.

6 – The winner is the first player to reach or exceed 2012 points.

7 – In the event that a single death pushes more than one player beyond the victory score the winner will be deemed to be the player with the highest overall score.

8 – In the event that a single death pushes more than one player beyond the victory score and a tie remains between the winners, a sudden death play-off will ensue between all potential winners.

8a – The sudden death play off involves all possible winners waiting until one player scores another death of a team member. Said player will then be declared the winner. The sudden death play off will continue until a single clear winner emerges.

9 - For the purposes of the Deathrace the same rules about eligibility of team members apply as apply in the DDP, which is obvious anyway cos we’ve been using those rules from the start of the Deathrace competitions.

10 – ‘Obit’ in the context of the Deathrace means any report from a reliable news source in English. In this context the following are admissable: ‘Newspaper obits, national newspaper reports, local newspaper reports, coverage in trade journals or similar specialist publications. In all cases evidence online from these sources is sufficient to count for an ‘obit’ for scoring purposes. In the event of a debate about a ‘reliable news source’ MPFC’s decision is final. But he is very reasonable and quite likely to award points to the lowest hanging fruit.

11 – To qualify for points all team members must be alive on January 1st 2012 or qualify for the Raymond Hewlett Memorial Exemption (RHME)

11a – In honour of everyone’s favourite Maddie-implicated paedo-scum the Deathrace operates a policy of awarding 366 points to any candidate widely believed to be alive on 1 January and subsequently discovered to have been deceased when the pool opened. To qualify for such a bonus said candidate must be reported dead in the year of the competition. In the event that an obit counting news report adhering to Deathrace qualification for points is subsequently discovered to have been published before the commencement of the Deathrace all points for the candidate are voided.

11b – In the event of disputes over rule 11a MPFC’s decision is final, but may be appealed by anyone attending a DLCon and supplying MPFC with foaming ale whilst appealing. The decision won’t be changed but MPFC will greatly enjoy the free beer.

12 – If any team is found to have used Deathlist editing options to subtly change the line up of their squad instant disqualification without appeal will follow and MPFC will not be held responsible for any abuse heaped upon said cheat by other posters.

13 – The winner will receive a prize as follows:

A: Should the winner attend the next DLCon MPFC will personally offer a single measure of an alcoholic drink of choice (beer/wine or spirit) along with much back patting and hearty congratulations.

B: If A is not possible MPFC will offer an item from his extensive collection of duplicate Carlisle United merchandise kindly donated by relatives who forget he already owns said books, scarves or pork pie hat.

C: If option B proves unattractive MPFC may be suggestible, via PMs, to offer summat more suitable. Previous prizes have included a DVD copy of the original Death Race 2000 movie and a charitable donation at the behest of DDP.

Other General Stuff

1 – After the closing date MPFC post a masterlist of entries.

2 – The masterlist will be updated at least every ten days and a scoreboard will appear until such time as a winner is declared.

3 – On declaration of a winner MPFC will seek to get the thread closed and offer hearty thanks to DL admins for their tolerance.

Is there any rule about having lifespans manipulated to faciliate winning the prestigous title - this could be a great opportunity to pick rank outsiders then persuade them to decease in order to bump up your score ?

just a thought...... :shoot:

Totally out of order MI, and also likely to favour any entrant professionally employed at a place like Broadmoor. However, your intervention is very timely because I've just been tweaking the rules hereabouts.

Please note the change to rule 5 above. In the interests of a skilful sprint to a satisfying Deathrace finish, the 2012 pool will allow DDP teams to change their jokers. So, if you've gone the sensible Robin Gibb option on the DDP joker but reckon Besse Cooper (low scoring on the DDP) is likely to go first, pick her, or any other conspicious low-hanger, for your Deathrace joker.

Aye, that's about it Est 1993, but then if you check the rules on counting obits they're fairly lax compared to DDP standards and the scores per pick are down to the days left in the year when they go. So, 12 of the lowest hangers should be able to see off 20 likely to die within the next year. The Dirty Dozen option has only been tried once, by Rotten Ali in 2011 and DDT's stunning performance swept everyone before him this year, so I don't think we've truly tapped the potential of the low-hangers.

Et moi, I reckon I'll go for the dozen option again this year makes it more interesting

I think I asked this last time I played this one, but can we PM you our lists because my DDP team is so brilliant and obviously going to win that I don't want to post it here before 1st Jan so that everybody can nick my picks?

But then that list was one of my least well tested and it showed me up good and proper to be well out of my depth in even understanding what low hanging fruit was... mine largely has stayed untouched on the tree till... even now I still notice 7 of the 12 still swaying back and forth...

So dirty they're positively sluts...BIG RESPECT Captain.

Re the query above, yep, please feel free to PM me with a team if you want to keep the dead pooling powder dry to the last second. I've just copied Mr Trautmann's team from a PM before writing this. The one restriction I will impose is to ban myself from entering a DDD team, since I could - hypothetically - nick your picks. That would be out of order. My line up will be one of my DDP teams, possibly with a different joker.

Good to have you aboard and delighted at the tonnage of dirty dozen options taken this year. Obviously the Grim Reaper will decide the winner but it does strike me as in keeping with the Deathrace spirit that the DD teams perform well this year.

Well, the DD sides look to have some good picks in them. I'm happy with my lot too, though I still suspect DDT will murder everyone (not literally, unless he is, as suspected, the Reaper :D ) in his way.

Okay, we're are up and running. All the usual details are on show. The only last minute hitch is Angry Greatness' jokerless DDD line-up. Mandela is default joker cos he's in pole position on that team. Elsewhere some very late entries suggested hard work down to the last minute. More competitors than ever, lots of unique picks and I'd defy anyone to say something intelligent about every single pick on the list. It could be a classic peoples! Let battle commence.

I'm not worried AG, but we've heard from our contacts in South Africa that he's shitting himself with the responsibility of delivering double points.
