Max Schmeling

Recommended Posts

I have watched quietly and with some amusement as this thread about some over hyped boxer (Max Two Threads Schmeling) has degenerated into an epicurean discussion, but now you have gone too far!

Leave the Marmite out of this and no one will get hurt!

Ok, I'll go quietly now.

I bet you anything Mr. Josco is passionately enthusiastic about Marmite.

Is this something Eileen ought to know about or has Mr Notapotato been fiddling with the editing machine. :old:

...and then there is the "divided by a common language" dilemma, which really confuses the issue.

One of the many very practical things about Germans is that a significant number of them can understand English.  If  English speakers could reciprocate, perhaps we might all live fuller and happier lives.

Do any native French/Dutch/German/ Tongan/other language speakers agree that to know a foreign language is an indispensible aid to undertanding a foreign culture?

Completely agree Captain.

There exists in the South West of France, a large population of generally retired ex-pat Brits who have absolutely no interest in France or the French. Their Doctor, Accountant, Notaire etc speak English, they have their BBC T.V. via the satellite, so why should they make the effort. They complain incessantly about the French laid back attitude, their 2 hour lunch breaks, their love of hunting and all the other things that make the French...well.. French.

You are right, these people would live fuller, happier lives if they could overcome the fear of the unknown and step outside the comfort zone of their 'jolie maison'. The French, whatever people might say to the contrary are very encouraging of people who make the effort, they want to talk about France and what makes French people tick. For the Brits sadly, this is an opportunity to understand and integrate, which is more often than not squandered to their own detriment. :old:

End of rant.

There is a not dissimilar community of Germans on Majorca.

And one of English people in Wales, dare I suggest?

Not to mention the Welsh in Australia :-)

End of rant.

This must be a joke!

I`ve been 3 times in Paris to visit a friend. I tried to order food in different restaurants several times. I really tried to pronounce it correctly in french. Maybe it was not 100 per cent perfectly pronounced but I think it was not so bad to arouse such an arrogant reaction of the waiter.

The french (at least in Paris) are very arrogant people! Bah! They obviously conceive it as an affront if foreigners try to speak french and make some little mistakes.

I have not found the French to be unduly arrogant; they are certainly less so than many British!

But it was a French waiter who upset you. Now that's a different matter. There is a certain tradition/style in some Parisian restaurants (more expensive ones) - the waiters are rude. It is part of the act!

If you are not familiar with a nation's ways - stay cool - observe - learn. :grave:

The French are (in my experience) extremely French and should be valued highly for that attribute. No-one else can do it better!

I think many French people would agree with you regarding their capital city, but you cannot compare Paris with the rest of France.

With respect, three visits to Paris and some encounters with waiters with attitude are hardly a reliable basis on which to judge the whole French population. I suggest that you try a visit further South.

I would add that it is not only Paris that has rude waiters. :grave:

I am seriously considering whether or not to delete all the posts that aren't written in English. I am sure our German friends can ( and no doubt do ) speak and/or read English very well ( alot better than my German anyway). So......... if you don't mind....Auf Englisch bitte.

Danke

He does, however spell "arse" properly, which suggests he might be British.

(Remember the same thing gave Amanda away)

Arse is probably his first name. He has dumped enough sh*t on this site anyway.

Poor Amanda, to be associated with an arse.

hey, I live in London City, so I'm not sure about the win-win thing. But if Mr. Bomber is going ahead, perhaps he would be kind enough to let us know when so we can head to the country for a couple of days, and focus his attacks on those parts of the city which would probably benefit from a good flattening. I can post a map with targets if that would help (watch out Dalston).......

What a sad, deluded person you are........

Are you referring to plane bombing or do you mean suicide bombings? Either way would be unfortunate for Londoners. However, if you refer to the latter, then I presume London will save on 1,000 benefit claimant payments.....just a thought.

;)

Are you thick? Y/N

Are you German? Y/N

(If German, you only need to answer the 2nd question, the first is a given!)

I read recently that at the end of the war that Hitler wanted to destroy the German people rather than surrender because of their treachery and cowardice. Well, as Eileen would say, there is good in everyone.

That's the way, OMJ, test their thinking processes with a survey that only has two possible answers....probably won't hear from Bummer Harris again.

However, from the drivel spouted from our "Aryan-Euro" friends on this site, I tend to agree with you. Perhaps Herr Hitler had a vision and predicted that future generations would turn into cry babies who wouldn't be able to take simple criticism....or, in fact, would not be able to get over a legal goal some 38+ years ago. Get over it!
