Whitehead died in 2005 (NYEve), so Iain still has time to mark the first of 2006.... ;)

I think he was taken into hospital on New Year's Eve, but didn't actually die until after the ball dropped... or whatever happens in your country on NYE.

according to this Philip Whitehead did indeed pass away in 2006.bad omen for Tony Blair that the first recorded death of 2006 was a Labour politician ;)

actor Dee Pollock has died aged 68

 

also US political journalistand author Harry Farrel has died aged 83

 

and Xolilizwe Sigcau ,the king of the Xhosas has passed away at 79

actually ive just had a thought..there are still quite a few reports of people whove died in the last few days of 2005 coming in,so i wonder if it would be possible to reopen the 'near misses for 2005' thread to cover the overspill..or should we just include them in the 2006 near misses category?

The 2005 Near Misses thread isn't locked or deleted, Iain. It's just been unpinned so you have to look down the list a bit before you find it.

The Guardian Obituary says it's the 31st December 2005. I'd be more inclined to believe that (especially as that paper has Labour links) than Wikipedia as people often plonk them in on the day they die.
