"Data Artist and TED fellow" Salvatore Iaconesi, has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Unusually, he has chosen to publish his medical records online, so anybody can check on his progress..

I don't think he's exactly A list, but the BBC did report on one of his inventions a couple of months ago. I felt a little out of touch with modern society after reading that article and am still a little unclear as to what a "TED fellow" actually is.

A TED fellow is someone who often gives speeches at TED talks I believe.

Fascinating videos.

If he's a TED Fellow, he'll get a Comment Is Free obit.

My favourite TED talk is the one about how masturbating to internet pornography is rewriting your brain.

Fascinating indeed.

I rather liked Dan Dennet's talk on The illusion of consciousness.

Normally I don't care much about philosophy and philosophers, but Dennet has a good point. I've been thinking occasionally about a somewhat related question ever since a bar discussion: "Is what I call I the driver or rather a passenger of my life?" My answer is both, of course. However, it seems we don't do much driving and if what Dennet describes is correct, we do most of that driving inside our minds, rather than in the outside world.

regards,

Hein

How about The 'inventor of the laser/maser', Charles H. Townes? No word on his health, but turns 96 next year. :old:

Townes is still in very good health for his age, and he's still very active (he's still mobile and publishing papers). Anything could happen at age 96 (falls can be fatal), but I'm not betting on him going anytime soon. (I think he'll surpass Bethe as the oldest Physics Nobel laureate)

Among all the older Nobel laureates, I'd bet against him and Chen Ning Yang dying. The others probably have higher chances of dying.

Charles received the Golden Goose award recently. Although, he is much less active now, as his latest lecture was given more than 5 years ago, and he is turning 98 next year. Could potentially be a contender for DL 2013.

Chen Ning Yang, has recently had a celebration for his 90th birthday which is coming up in October, but seems to be doing well and is still highly active in his field. So you're most likely right about his longevity.

Luo Yuan @ 51. Was engineer behind the Chinese fighter plane that landed on their first carrier, indeed had a heart attack and pegged it whilst watching first landing.

John MacAfee, as in "the guy behind your antivirus software", is wanted for murder in Belize after a man was shot dead in an argument about dogs. Apparently his time in Belize was spent trying to discover "super perv powder".

John has suffered a heart attack after he was arrested by Guatemalan authorities. http://abcn.ws/VKfAwl

There's no mention of it in his blog, nor by the BBC.

He does appear to rule out suicide though,

I’ve been reading posts (There’s no TV here). One poster asked, in a kindly way, whether I felt like killing myself. My reply:

“I enjoy living, and suicide is absurdly redundant. The world, from the very begining, hurls viruses, accidents, hungry animals, defective DNA — and uncountable more – in an attempt to kill us. It always succeeds. Suicide is simply aiding and abetting.”

Your anti-virus can't help with that, John...

Bad luck. I liked that pick so much, I nicked it for 2014, knowing he would likely not make that long. Be interesting, albeit now fruitless for you, if he would've got an relevant obit.

So I thought I was onto something with my pick of computer programmer Mark Crispin, inventor of IMAP protocol (as in the thing that makes email work), for my DDP team. And I was. Except he died on December 28th and his family only just announced the death.

This really, really isn't my deadpooling year.

Unlucky mate, unlucky...

Yeah, I think I vastly overrated how famous computer programmers are. No wonder they all their bags thrown on the roof at school.
