Louis Riel, a Canadian rabble-rouser who my G-Grandfather at age 9 played an important role in capturing; 130 years.

Had to have a look ...

Riel ordered the execution of a Protestant who annoyed him

Riel was tried before a jury of six English and Scottish Protestants,

Fun days it seems.

Without him dying at the age of 75 this day 25 years ago, the Robert Hofstadter memorial lecture would never have been instituted.

Not just a general, a generalissimo, even, i.e. a superlative prick.

Two years ago, American "psychic" Sylvia Browne died. She made a habit of telling the parents of kidnapped children they were talking to her from beyond the grave only for them to turn up alive. She also told Larry King that she had been foretold she would live to the age of 88.

She was 77.

We all know what I'm going to say here...

Bet she didn't see that coming.

Today in 1910 Russian author Leo Tolstoy died, aged 82, of pneumonia at Astapovo train station. He´s best known for his novel War and Peace, the reading of which takes about as long as the French invasion of Russia in 1812 it describes.
