ALGIERS: Cameroonian football player Albert Ebosse died Saturday after he was hit by a projectile thrown from the stands following his team’s loss in the Algerian football championship, APS news agency reported.

Ebosse, who was 24, was declared dead after he was rushed to a hospital at Tizi Ouzou, east of the capital Algiers, where the match took place.

He scored the lone goal for his club JS Kabylie in the home match in what turned out to be a 2-1 defeat against USM Alger, on the second day of the tournament.

Fans had started throwing objects from the stands inside the Tizi Ouzou stadium after the match as the players were returning to their changing room.

Ebosse joined JS Kabylie in 2013, and was top scorer in the 2013-2014 championship.

The Algerian interior ministry ordered an investigation to search for the culprit.

Was surprised to discover today that Frank O' Farrell, another one who found the Old Trafford hot seat a struggle is still alive

Often see him at Torquay games as he lives in the area and still supports the club. Still pretty decent for his age. He'll be a big loss for us when he goes

Cheers for the form studying RF, clearly Frank didn't head too many heavy leather balls in his playing days.

German defender Andreas Biermann commits suicide aged 33 after a long struggle against depression.

http://www.tagesspie...n/10225210.html (Sorry can't find an English language story on it)

Didn't another German footballer top himself a few years ago, a goalie IIRC. What's going on there?

The guys name was Robert Enck, he threw himself under a train. I think he was either depressed or financially worried.

I also heard recently that Sammy Conn (formerly of Falkirk) had passed away aged 53 from Motor Neurone Disease. If anyone could get an article on that...

Oh dear.

Both AZ Alkmaar and Van Basten himself deny this. An article on the news website of Dutch national broadcaster NOS says (translated):

De Telegraaf1 reported today that Van Basten will quit as manager. When asked by NOS, AZ director Earnest Stewart and Van Basten's agent Perry Overeem both denied. "It's incorrect and it jumps the gun", Stewart reacted. Overeem said that the news is wrong and that a statement will be made coming week."

Presumably more news will come out next Monday.

1 A Dutch tabloid.

Hein

It took a bit more time, but the news is out. Van Basten will switch jobs with current assistant manager Alex Pastoor. Van Basten said he doesn't expect to work as full manager again.

ISTM he's nowhere near death.

Hein

Update: last Sunday Van Basten did attend AZ Alkmaar's match against PEC Zwolle (1-0), but not as assistant to Alex Pastoor. Pastoor got the sack last week. The club lied that they couldn't agree about a new contract, but the truth came out last Sunday night: AZ thought Pastoor had leaked the news of Van Basten's self-relegation to the press. That wasn't the case and AZ retracted their accusation. Pastoor now challenges his dismissal.

To be continued.

Hein

Meh, his equaliser in 67 led to the break in the Latin domination of the Big One, and as being the first out of two british players to score in multiple European Cup Finals.....yep, legend.
