Without giving the man an ego, it does remind me of Sir Creeps "only dead people obit" comment.

 

Although it does feel sometimes like some editors read this forum, with some of the obscure folk who get QOs these days. Which brings up the modern DDP gamble: do you announce on the forum someone obscure you found being ill, and almost secure them a QO, or do you keep quiet on the offchance its unique and hope for the best? With that and the potential new points system, it's going to be more of a tactical game to my mind next year.

I'd say it depends on the level of fame. If it's someone who is at least somewhat known such as Martin Crowe or Gord Downie, obviously they would be addressed on the forum. On the other hand, people who are found and aren't so famous such as Hassan Asif would be kept hidden until the new season of the DDP begins.

Read a magazine feature on the latest Brian Wilson tour this weekend which points out that he played Southend not long after the New Seekers were due there. The New Seekers gig was cancelled because one of them - younger than Briain Wilson - had a stroke. Struggling to find evidence but Paul Layton (aged 69) is the only ever-present New Seeker whilst Eve Graham (73) is also - probably - obitable. New Seeker business is clearly desperate to the point the official website is down and sites of former members are years behind events.

I have just crunched some numbers comparing acts that had UK No.1 hits in 1957, 1967 & 1977.

 

In 57 there were 11 acts who had a No.1. Still living there are four solo artists (Tommy Steele, Tab Hunter, Paul Anka & Harry Belafonte) in addition there is one cricket (Jerry Allison) So 4.25/11 is 38.6%.

A similar analysis for 67 gives 7.33333/12 = 61% and for 77 12.683333/16 = 79.3%.

The only person who is on more than one list is Paul McCartney.

So we should lose 2.7 acts from the 67 list in the next 10 years.

Putting aside the question of why, this is an interesting piece of analysis. Of the '57 names, Tab is writing books, Paul is still performing, Harry is still an activist and Tommy is crap as Glen Miller (a horrendous piece of miscasting). Hard to say who would go first (though Tommy Steele is dying more often). What about letting us see the rest of the lists?

You know I would have thought anyone who has ever had a UK #1 single would be a slam dunk obituary, but Kitty Kallen scotched that idea. I'd say being the frontman of The Floaters should get you some coverage, but maybe their bassist shouldn't hold out for a full page in the Times.
