Oldest People You Know

I've been quite fascinated with people who live to a ripe old age for years, wondering what keeps them going really. Mainly down to my Nan, who turned 100 in April and is still going strong well, she's still going anyway. Shes a lot like Zsa² Gabor in the sense that shes been at deaths door for bloody years but refuses to give in!! She's a lot different to Zsa² Gabor in the sense she has 10 toes, not that she's used any of them for walking in a long while.

 

So anyones else on here have any coffin dodgers in the family or amongst friends?

Well, the oldest person I *knew* was my great-grandmother (dad's mom's mom) who died on January 19th of this year, just days before her 96th birthday. As I mentioned in the "Death in the Family" thread, she had been in the hospital the last week of her life and was also similar to Zsa Zsa Gabor in a sense - could barely communicate, could barely move, etc.

But her health only became that bad when she was admitted to the hospital... so the poor care she was given is to blame for her death, according to the family, rather than the fact that she had too much water in her organism (mainly in her lungs). BTW, does anyone know what that disease is called?

 

Anyways, enough about that. The oldest living person I know is my step-great-grandmother (mom's dad's step-mom). She turned 94 in May. Also since January, her health has been in decline, because she broke her hip and couldn't have surgery because of her weak heart. So she is bedridden.

 

Other than her, I only have one other great-grandparent left. That would be my mom's mom's mom. She is going to be 93 in October. She always seemed to be in worse health than the other two, although she was the youngest. She has had numerous operations the past year, and suffered from bronchitis just a few months ago.

Oldest person who i know presently is my Grandma who is 88 years old and it is her Birthday today, she is in good health for her age. The oldest person i have ever known was my great great Auntie Annie she died at the age of 99 years and 7 months and died the day before the Trade centre attacks in the USA. Overall she was in terrible health for years prior to her death, not as bad as Zsa Zsa but bad enough as she was deaf, couldn't walk but stayed at home until a few weeks before her death with home help, she refused to go into a old people's home and as she had no Children of her own and her younger sister lived in Australia (She died at 96) she got her own way.

Oldest person who i know presently is my Grandma who is 88 years old and it is her Birthday today, she is in good health for her age. One of my great-grandmothers (this time it was dad's dad's mom) died sometime around 9/11. Because planes were banned from flying at the time (apparently... hey, I was only 2 months old), my grandpa couldn't come to the funeral, because he was in the USA at the time.

He couldn't make his dad's funeral either in 1985, he was also in the USA at the time and since Poland was communist (I don't know all the details so I hope I got it right) he couldn't fly into the country because something and stuff.

The oldest person I know is my Nana's cousin she is 87 this year. The oldest person I ever knew was my Nannie, I wrote about her on another thread, she passed away 13 years ago last month at the age of 106. She lived independently until she was 101 and was forced into a care facility when her much younger second husband passed away. She was engaged at 103 but the fella died before the wedding could take place. She had all her marbles to the end and was the meanest lady I ever knew.

 

Nana (96 - January 2015) and Nannie (106) are the only two with longevity so far. My mum was 43 and my father was 64 when they passed respectively. Probaby explains my facination with death.

I have known lots of old people they have just nearly alldied.I have met two centenarians but have no clue when or if they are now dead.3 of my lae grandparents were in nursing homes so I met my fair share of Zsa Zsa`s who were in their 90`s in appalling health but seem to linger on forever and ever.Currently the oldest person In my family is my great Uncle who is 92 and survived an aggressive brain tumour 4 years ago but still lives independently.

This was my great aunt - at the time of her death on Boxing Day last year aged 108 she was 47th oldest person in UK and, as the link states, the fourth oldest person in Scotland.

thats one hell of an age to be fair. cant imagine getting to the ripe old age of 108 and still there are 46 people in the country older than you!

Actually, my 87 year old neighbour (a woman) might be the oldest person I know well. In fact, I think I've never known any nonagenerian well. There was the former owner of the house we now live in, who died at 90 and our neighbour upstairs who is 93, but never leaves the flat. In fact, I've never seen her in the 4 years I live in this area, and only received some demented phone calls of her (no joke). I've never consciously seen a centenarian.

My GG-Grandmother from Ireland supposedly died at 102, and got a big write up in the newspaper; modern research suggests the informant (my G-Grandfather her son) kinda made it up, as she was very likely 88 instead. Tombstone shows 102 though pfft.

The women-folk seem to last to mid-80s in my tree, the men as long as the bottle will allow.

 

My older sister's mother-in-law is 93 and rolling along without any terrible medical needs to date. She attended my mother's wake in January and was as spry as a 93-yr old should be.

I was out on a family reunion and I saw my great grandfather who is nearly 90 and his health is very good for someone his age. The only thing that I could see wrong with him was a bit if a limp but that par for the course when you are that old.
