Leonid Stadnyk (And Other Tall People)

Recommended Posts

This is a bit "left-field", but Leonid Stadnick (Ukraine) should be considered for forthcoming DealthLists. Although he's only in his late 30s, he is currently the world's tallest man. His height appears to have now stopped at 8 ft 5ins, although earlier estimates have gauged him as reaching 9ft+. I'm not sure what happened over the last year to stop his growth, but THINK he had brain surgery (or treatment) to suppress a pituatry anomoly.

From documentaries etc, he appears in pretty good health, however the increased mileage of bloodflow around his body places a huge burden on his heart.

Personally, I hope he bucks the Giantism trend (of dying young).

Where are you finding this interesting information regarding the relative health risks of tall people?

Only: one of my blokes is 6'6

(hardly a giant, compared to Leonidko, but quite enough hugeness for me to cope with all at one time :o )

I'd be really interested to see what he might die of (for purely medicinal purposes, of course ... )

I already have to factor gunshots, knife wounds, runnings-over, and bombings into the equation, so it would be interesting to see what are the actual health risks of being tall.

(apart from always banging your head on doorways, and getting a hunch back from having to bend down over a foot to kiss your short fat girlfriend) :D

Re "(hardly a giant, compared to Leonidko, but quite enough hugeness for me to cope with all at one time :( )"... Hi HellKat, sounds like you had plenty on your hands. :)

I agree that, to be currently classified as a giant, someone must be 6'6'' tall. However, these days most people know someone taller than, or at least close to that height. Perhaps it's time to reclassify a clinical giant as someone exceeding 7'.

In terms of true giants (8'+), their acromegaly causes a tremendous pressure on the heart; having to pump blood over a greater distance. The hearts tend to become enlarged and, ultimately, something "gives". I believe Robert Wadlow died of a leg ulcer, a complication of his weakened bloodflow.

I'd guess that a weakened bloodflow would also stop giants from "engorging their loins". Is this true?

Both my children's fathers are well over six foot tall, and they're both complete assholes. Is there a link, I wonder?

There COULD be something in that.

Several lankypeeps of my acquaintence are, in fact, complete knob-heads.

Frustratingly, in attempting to tell them so, one often feels like a fox terrier snapping at ankles.

I so hate having to shout up at people.

Finger-pointing rage is not nearly as effective when you have to point in a northerly direction.

Mind you, many MANY short-arses are too, come to think of, and much more easy to harangue eyeball to eyeball.

Fair point. I just wanted an excuse to call my soon-to-be-ex-husband an asshole. Not that I need an excuse, I suppose. Funny, all my important relationships have either been with extremely tall or extremely short men. The two tall ones are assholes, and the short one is dead. I wonder what this all means?

Anyhow, I wonder who is most likely to die - tall or short people. Is it an option next year to put all the DL candidate's heights on the front page along with their age, occupation etc? We could gain some really important insight into the whole subject. Or am I just talking bollocks?

When I did my "little people" theme team for DDP last year it was fairly easy to find aged short people. I ad a quick skeet around the web for older tall people and there weren't as many. Not sure what that means really

I've never had a tall boyfriend, for some reason tall men just don't fancy me, oh well

I'm very short, so I think the tall assholes I was with perhaps thought it would be easier to treat me like sh*t because I was small and perhaps wouldn't fight back as much as someone a bit taller. And no men, tall or short, fancy me any more. Woe is me.

Indeed you are not, madam.

There is always room for further research on topics of possible relevance.

How do you think scientists manage to get away with wheedling huge grants out of corporations, other than by dreaming up some sort of inane research to fund their academic dossing-about.

I've never had a tall boyfriend, for some reason tall men just don't fancy me, oh well

Me neither, till this one loomed handsomely onto the horizon, scared the sh*t out of me, and cut out all my natural light :D

Changed my mind regarding tall people, though.

Previous to him, I'd really only fancied that most delectable of All Blacks*: Jonah Lomu, who I have since discovered is of remarkably similar build to my No. 1 Chaperone.

The actual mr hellkat is an averagely heighted 5'9", but he IS ginger, so no doubt his death index ratio (is there such a thing?) is probably skewed by that fact.

*tragically for you lot, I am a very patriotic Kiwi - albeit mostly based in London ... and what is worse, I am about to head off home for several months, so I shall be pestering you from the underbelly of the world shortly.

Woe, schmoe ... Never give up hope, Mrs ... for that's when they seem to be able to smell that you are desparate, and treat you accordingly.

(or at least, thats my experience: look desparate=pull a W**ker/look confident and independent=pull a lesser W**ker)

There's always another one round the corner ... when you least expect them to turn up, that's when they do

(and why I'm currently stressed out about two of the buggers falling about all over me, instead of just one).

And believe me ... I'm no oil painting (must be me brains, then, or me blowjob technique, can't seem to get properly shot of either one of them *sigh*).

So clearly they are both of the "not right in the head" variety.

You don't want one, I seem to have a penchant for tall men, but you end up speaking to their chests and as hellkat says it's a bugger to argue with them, I'm only just over 5 foot tall so I know what she means. Next time I'm going for a short guy!

Oh you poor women!! :D

And what exactly do you think its like for us tallies? Im 6ft 1 and Lady FN is, about 5ft3. I have to stoop for a kiss, cant own a little car because I tend to find my knees up to my f*****g chin if I try to drive it, I have to lift things that much further upwards, my back is knackered and if Im having a bit of rumpy, pumpy ( not too often now, admittedly) and Im on top Lady FN tends to get a hairy chest to look at, while I get the joys of looking at a headboard or, if Im lucky, the top of her head.....Hmmmm, its not all that bad then :o

All you short arses dont know your born!!

PS: Lardy, it would appear your taste in men, irrespective of height, is shite.

PPS: Handy, I assume the IOM is festooned with lots of tall gay men?

Sounds like your bedroom could do with some extra mirrors, sunshine.

The messrs hellkat were quite pleased to discover my innocently efficacious placement of a seemingly-bland mirror in my bedroom wall-unit.

A webcam might have been a better choice. So much pleasure for all those little boys out in Internetland.

Mr. Stadnick would be very upset if he knew his thread has become a bastion for male-bashing. Does a Rosie O'Donnell thread exist?

Hopefully. the thread will appear as an unexepected deathlist hit for 2008. I detest the attention-seeking, no-brainer, fame-seeker.

Doesn't it look like the guy on the left is standing at a much farther distance then where his hand is? Look at his shoes and then look at his hand. The bottom half of him might be some other person. There is something wrong with this picture.

Is this the thread for discussing the health of the tallest women in the world too?

Because I don't know who else watched "The Tallest Woman in the World And Me" on Channel 4 on Tuesday night but..

Sandy Allen - Wiki page - was constantly depressed, continually neglected her health, was in & out of hospital, is permamently in a wheelchair & has lived much longer than someone of her gigantism should've done. It was hard not to feel extremely sorry for her, but at the same time think "Yep, putting her on the CPDP was a good choice."

(The show also featured the world's oldest woman, Edna Parker. The retirement home there is quite vast, far removed from the visions I had of a pokey old house with small rooms. Parker has a massive room - it's almost a hotel/hospital combined. They take good care of her, but at 115, you could go any time. I reckon she'll make it to 2009 at least as she was alert & seemed healthy)

Anyway, Yao Defen, who is THE tallest in the world lives in shocking conditions. Only cared for by her elderly (and bad tempered) mum, she can't even stand up for longer than an hour. Her room is tiny & it looked dirty. She has a heart condition & is extremely frail. Part of her tumour remains and to quote Wiki:

A British Television Program filmed a documentary on her and helped raise money so she could get proper medical care. Two leading doctors in Acromegaly agreed to help Yao. She was taken to a nearby city hospital, where imaging procedures revealed that a small portion of her tumor, removed many years before, still remained, causing continuing problems, including weakening vision as it pressed against her optic nerve. She returned home, then was admitted for a month under observation in the larger Shanghai Ruijin Hospital, and given dietary supplements. In that hospital, her growth hormone was greatly slowed down, although it is still a problem. Upon her return home to her mother and brother, she was able to walk with crutches, unassisted by others, and was given a six-month supply of medicines and supplements in hopes of improving her condition enough to undergo surgery.

Yao currently suffers from hypertension, heart disease, poor nutrition, and osteoporosis. Acromegaly (or gigantism) results from a tumor within the pituitary gland that causes excess growth hormone secretion. As a result, the body's features become enlarged. It can also delay the onset of puberty as is the case with Yao. She has no secondary sexual characteristics. Potential complications without necessary surgery include blindness and eventually premature death.

Again, it was hard not to have anything but sympathy & affection for Yao, especially as the documentary, well-meaning as it was was rather clumsy, due to poor research, but both would have to be a genuine DL contender, me thinks
