Angola were leading 4-0 with only 15 minutes left to play, so a bright spark decided to place a sizable wager of £4400 that Angola would go on to win the match, if they had done so, he would have made a profit of £44. Of course Mali then scored four goals in the last eleven minutes to secure a draw, thereby depriving the hapless gambler of his savings. The atmosphere was as subdued as I've ever seen it at the festival, but the weather was gorgeous. He put an each way on Mon Mome (incredibily at 100/1, doesn't anyone know he won the Grand National only last year?). I looked at the list and the name Imperial Commander stared back at me and my initial thought was "hmmm, that's got a Gold Cup-winning ring about it" and the promptly did sweet FA about it. (I had less than a tenner and was more concerned at procuring the vinyl copy of The Teardrop Explodes classic 1981 album "Wilder" from Rockaboom). The final winner hadn't won in its last 28 attempts and its female jockey had never ridden a winner before. Not bad for a £2 bet. Not only that, but he got into the meeting on a free ticket, had never had a go on the Jackpot before, and to cap it all, he ripped up his original bet as it came to £32 and he thought that was too much! My dear fellow, Silver By Nature is a grey with an excellent chance, having won a good trial at Haydock recently. But beware, no grey has triumphed since Nicolaus Silver in 1961.
