(several arse-witted posts deleted, IP 80.192.13.173 will be watched for future bell-endery)

Top marks - I do love this site for giving me excellent words to add to my everyday vocabulary. Bellend is a word that frequents my house, however never have I used it with that particular extension. I will make a point of trying to include it in conversation as often as possible now. I hope you don't mind - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that. Thank you

There are reports (in French) of the death of philosopher Jean Baudrillard. Of course, this may merely be a simulacrum.

You know, I was thinking about him the other day. I'm a big fan of his...I met him once..

..and I was thinking of him as a possibility for the list! (b.1929)

Shame if he went though...he still has a lot to say on the postmodern world... :)

Postscript: I get told of this news when I'm looking forward to a rather important match. Baudrillard liked his football and based one of his theories on it. Ironically enough, I learned of Jacques Derrida's death just before another important football match (France v Ireland)...

How can you be sure it was him and not a simulation of him (in that the notion of Baudrillard as received through his writing predetermined the existence of the Baudrillard you met)? What do you mean by 'met', anyway?

Aside from my flippancy, he was a provocative and original thinker, and for that alone, a loss. His death is now being reported by Le Monde.

I've got his autograph somewhere....

Apparently he died after a long illness. I'm surprised no-one picked him for DDP, he wasn't really obscure or anything...

Here's the Guardian obituary. Perhaps you're right, maybe it was his simulacrum that died!

Tennis commentator Bill Threlfall has died aged 81. Bit of a shock.

Quite.

That's a shame, he's one of my favourite Tennis commentators...

didn't know he was that old.... :)

American actress Betty Hutton dead at age 86, of colon cancer according to some sources.

Unique selection for someone or other on the DDP.

EDIT: f*****g hell, wrong thread. Could the mods please move this to "The Dead?"

Hmm.. might have guessed this would happen. Spent a little time reshuffling my DDP '08 list & updating a list of Jimmy Stewart co-stars still living, so what happens a few hours after printing that out? Sod's law, really...

:banghead: On my reserve list last year, but Wrongopedia seemed to signify she was okay. :banghead:

Ah well, a good actress, I remember her role in The Greatest Show on Earth. Shame.

Eustace Lycett who worked for the Disney special effects department for 43 years, winning two Oscars, has died. He created the scene in Bedknobs and Broomsticks when suits of armour moved around and Angela Lansbury flew off on a broom.

In fact he died last November but he's only just made the news.

Damn. He was one of my secret candidates for the WDP. Back in early February, there was one mention of him with terminal cancer that disappeared the next day. :banghead:

Bout 230 strong.

The "serious" list is about 90, but the thing is I keep seeing possibilities where I think "I'd better keep them in some kind of list in case I forget about them later", hence the list is rather elagonated to 200 odd.

Hutton was about 25th on my list for 2006, IIRC. Never mind.

EDIT

I knew I should've waited to re-do that Jimmy Stewart list. Another co-star, Eddie Firestone has also died.
