Not Exactly Famous...

Recommended Posts

American talk show host, Mike Douglas has died at the age of 81...and on his 81st birthday as well.

I recall fondly his daily television show. It would come on the air and entertain me for a while and then it would be over and the first of the news programs would appear. One of my early tape recording fiascos included a few words from him, a few minutes from the Gordon MacRae/Shirley Jones version of Carousel and then some minutes of an episode of I Love Lucy...the Carlotta Romero episode.

And for the record I find it unfortunate that a great man such as Mike Douglas would be stuffed into this 'Not Exactly Famous" category. Were it not for him, Phil Donahue, Sally Jessey, Oprah and others never would have had a chance. Mike Douglas was a pioneer.

I know he's famous, however I couldn't find any discussion on him where he was considered as a possiblity.

So I put him here, we really need a 3rd thread to put the ones that are famous but we forgot were within a shot of dying this year

Yes, that would indeed be a good idea.

OK, I've started a new thread just for that purpose. So we can put the likes of Syd Barrett, Arthur Lee, Gene Pitney, Mike Douglas etc in there and any others that come a cropper

Why don't we just have one big "dead people" thread? It'd be a bit unruly, but it's not like we'd need to reference it for future discussion/consideration. That way too, a death is posted in one place and one place only and most of the time, people who are trying would be able to see who has been posted and who hasn't. To hell if the person is famous or not, if you want to mention them, mention them. Surely one very unruly thread is better than three semi-unruly threads?

Phantom, the general rule I think we agreed on when I did the I & P thread, even if they weren't mentioned, but you thought they were famous enough - Near Misses. If not mentioned, and not famous enough, this thread. No need for a third thread.

Hence Al Balding, Carl Brashear, Patrick Allen et al - Near Misses, despite not being mentioned.

But one big "They're Dead, folks" thread would be far, far better and stop this infernal arguing about notability & I agree, you could see if they're mentioned or not already. Well, most people will. <_<

Surely that is possible somebody?

Phantom, Arthur Lee had his own thread.

Octi,

well I know Arthur Lee had his own thread, I was using him as an example of someone who had died but wasn't originally discussed as a possibility, but was later on. if that makes any sense?

Perhaps Gene Pitney should really have been a better example

*Ahem* Back to my suggestion, what do the mods think of a single thread for reporting deaths, as per my arguments above?

Also, if they could move the nonsense to the Iain thread, it would muchly be appreciate.

At least a few of us here find it entertaining! <_<

the well known Cuban conga player Anga Diaz has died at 46.Now the reason I mention this is because apparentely Fidel Castro wa a big fan of his.Could the death of his favourite musician be the straw to tip Fidel off his perch?

I sincerely doubt it because a quick check of Diaz's obituaries & a Google search, something I advise you doing occasionally, reveals nothing about this "favourite musician" bollocks.

Sorry, but you'll have to do better than that to back up your prediction.

iain, I think it's back into rehab for you! Or maybe you could make yourself useful and check in undercover at Brinsworth House for a couple of weeks.

Posting the same post in two threads? Mr Hopkins will be paying you a visit.

In the meantime, stare at the kitty...

I've had a look around a couple of threads, but can't seem to find any existing reference- I'm sure there is, so apologies in advance if I'm duplicating this-

I read at the weekend that Kenneth Richmond, who was the guy who banged the gong at the start of J Arthur Rank films (NOT wank films!) passed away, aged 80.

He was found dead just down the road from me at his beachside property in Christchurch, Dorset. Apparently he was a former wrestling star who won a bronze medal at the Melbourne Olympics in 1952, the same year he first appeared banging his gong on film (NOT wanking).

Phew, I'm off for a lie down now- me, straying into Iain territory and actually reporting a death! I just hope I put in the right place and that it's not already been reported. Sorry again if it has.

Finally, the Sun's headline about this made me smile:

'So long, Mr. Gong.'

Ouch! Damn, I didn't go back far enough- lazy, silly me. Seeing as it was in Sat's Sun I only went back a day or so before that in the thread.

So, I blame the Sun for its lethargic attitude to posting news regarding death. Bollocks to them, I shall take a leaf out of Iain's book and rely on Wikipedia instead.

Or, I shall simply leave matters of death related posting to those with their fingers on the pulse (as it were) and stick to posting my usual nonsensical sh*t.

:(

P.S. How come 'wank' evades the swear filter? And before anyone posts the link to the previous conversations about the swear filter, I am aware of those, but I was just wondering. I mean, how common is the word wank? Oh well...

I have just discovered the following worrying anagram:

"Brinsworth House Baiter" >>> "Who? Iain's brother Buster"!!!
