Veres was born in 1947 from a Hungarian gipsy violinist and a German mother and she showed an early talent for music. At sixteen she began her carreer at a students' group Les Mysteres, followed by the Blue Fighters, the Bumble Bees, Danny and his Favorites and the Motowns and eventually in 1968 Shocking Blue.

 

Shocking Blue had existed since 1967, but they were looking for a new singer because their current one was draughted for military service.

 

Venus

A year after her joining the band it achieved world fame with Venus, that got to the top of the charts in, among other countries, Japan and the USA. In the Netherlands Venus was listed in the charts twice, but never got a better position than number three.

 

Two other songs, Mighty Joe and Never Marry a Railroad Man did reach the number one position in the Dutch Top 40, but never acquired the fame of Venus.

 

Life

The band existed till 1974. In the 80s there was a failed attempt to reunite the band.

 

In 1993 the singer released a jazz album, but because of enduring calls for Shocking Blue she started, with the other members' permission, a new band with the same name. Last year the singer toured eight Dutch theatres with her band.

The drummer died a couple of years ago didn't he? Can't remember what of off-hand.

 

Great singer: sort of the Dutch Grace Slick, and Shocking Blue were a fantastic band - plenty of other wonderful songs as well as 'Venus'. I shall play 'Send Me A Postcard' in memory.

 

 

I suspect she will get a UK obit of some sort, though ''Venus' singer dies' will get a few people crying: "Oh God, one of Bananarama's copped it"...

I read in it a Dutch tabloid early in the year. I suppose the news will eventually leak to English language news sources. I don't think she would have been DL material, but good enough for a DDP unique pick. Oh well.

Ah, "Venus" - one of the few songs based on the E minor to A major chord change. People of my generation remember the Bananarama version better, though even we could tell it wasn't a Stock/Aitken/Waterman composed song as it had more than 4 notes.

OK, so he died on 8 April 1998, 49 years old. The article suggests (but doesn't state) that he drank himself to death.

 

My failure to find this info had its cause in that I tried to find an English language source.
