Folk singer and musician Guy Carawan, who introduced the song “We Shall Overcome” to those rallying for civil rights in the 1960s, died Saturday after a lengthy illness. He was 87. http://www.knoxnews....market_36983659

Getting back on rant, again, how is Joni Mitchell 'folk music'? Worse, the damned topic says Gordon Lightfoot, which under no definition of folk music would he (or the song Sundown) be included (not even a Brit definition). Someone shoulda railed on the doofus who created the thread the day it happened. It's pop music, period. Easy Listening. Whatever. But not FOLK music.
Folk music is protest music (see: Pete Seeger; Peter Paul & Mary). What next, Harry Chapin was 'folk' music? The next protest song Lightfoot or Mitchell write will be the first one they write. Joni is as much jazz (see Mingus album) as folk if you're going to cubbyhole her incorrectly.
Get your definitions right and heads outta your arses.

Some folk music is protest music, some protest music is folk music, but the terms are not synonymous. Listen to this, traditional folk music - what's the protest angle on that?

If you think folk music is just protest music I suggest you need to broaden your horizons.

Most of the lot mentioned above were classed as folk rock for years and most of their best selling output falls into that bag, so the point of folk in the thread was to lump those songwriters in with the likes of John Renbourn who are mainly known, and obitable, in the UK, i.e. to nick the same lazy labelling that saw anyone with an acoustic guitar in the 60's/70's as a folkie. Speaking as the doofus who created this thread, it doesn't seem to have bothered anyone else for years and seems to qualify on the basis of having the usual clunking pun in the subtitle. As a rule internet forums like this don't attract the attention of trading standards, but feel free to report this thread to them, their comments might breathe life into ranters thread hereabouts.

Not sure whether this should go here, in the Shove Off, Eh thread or the Dead Pop Stars thread, but this isn't very promising for one of my great great heroes. :-(

BBC News saying she was in good spirits, though she is in the ICU. I'm guessing something circulatory/cardiac (given her history as a life-long smoker).

John Renbourn, guitarist with folk group Pentangle, dies at 70. http://www.heraldsco...-70-x.121737895

Bugger :( , he was meant to be in the pish up here in the next week or two.

Mate has an unreleased documentary on him filmed in Spain that Renbourn refused to let get released.

Need to work on him for it I reckon.
