The Weatherman Death Pool

Recommended Posts

Excellent. At least there's one dead pool I'm not last in.

Indeed - I noticed some striking similarities between the recently deceased Ford and your other 93 year old selection, Michael Foot. Ford became the longest lived President - Foot became the longest lived leader of a British Politcal Party (both this year), they are both 93 of course, and let's not forget, both of their last names start with F.

Maybe Foot will follow Ford's footsteps like a folly friend?

Weatherman; given the plethora of pools presently, are you going to rekindle this particular fire from March 2007?

That's a good question. I will be continuing the pool beginning as soon as the current one ends. I will open it up for registration somewhere around late February. I'm hoping I can get all our current players back again :skull: , plus 15 more or so. So I'm aiming for about 35 teams this year - I think it can be done.

The DDP decided to use my age-based scoring technique this year, so I would like to come up with something unique to my pool. WDP II will kick off at 00:01 UTC on April 1, 2007.

I'm thinking about giving one extra point for a unique pick. Any thoughts?

Yeah, and - mebbe - deducting a point for any pick already on the DL top 50, that should light a fire or two on the message boards.

Some suggestions:

No under 18s

No people famous for terminal illness

No people already sentenced to death

Since anyone with a wikipedia page can be chosen, it balances out a bit.

How about cap your pool to 35 entrants. That will make it as manigable as you want. Also those people who leave it as late to enter as possible may miss-out. Say you open the submissions on 1st March, should anyone lose a team member on their submitted entry to an early death then give them an early extra few points and allow them to resubmit a sub' name. Should you still not have your 35 teams entered by 1st April 07 then keep the pool open beyond the date till you have your full quota. The end date of the game would still be 31st March 08 but these late teams would only be handicapping themselves with less "die time". Plus, any late teams would not be able to chose any person already picked by any of the players with a pre 1st April 07 submitted team.

Any bonuses on offer for theme teams, WM? I'm thinking of an amputees dream team.

Sorry, I'm not re-entering due to other committments.

Nothing personal, as I didn't enter Hartlepool or Handreijka's & I'm withdrawing from the Rotten Dead Pool too when my year with them is up.

As for a suggestion - do what you like - it's your death pool. If you want to give more (or less) points ranked on things like candidates height, or letters in their name, for example, then go for it. :)

Another suggestion for improvement is to have the team entries submitted differently, so that one’s team entries are not visible to any other prospective teams before the competition starts.

Last year, we had to place them on the wiki entry page, but they were visible to every other team. Maybe they should be submitted by PM, email or entered on a private entry form to ensure privacy before the competition starts.

Yes. I'd second that too. Otherwise keep doing what you're doing.

Gerald Ford, as most of you know, has finally died age 93 - the oldest Pres in history. 8 teams: myself, Icelandic Hurricane, Slave to the Grave, Halleluyahjohntudor, WSDA, Windsor the Troll, Handrejka, and JD. This is the first hit and about time for me and WSDA, and now all 19 players have had at least one hit in this jolly old pool. With that said, Ford's death brings a new first place holder - our own Slave to the Grave. SttG and Canadian Paul had been tied for several months and most recently tied at 31. Now, since CP chose not to select Ford, SttG leaps ahead to 37 with her 5th hit. Football Fan is still in 3rd with 30 points, and now JD and Windsor are tied with 27 for 4th. Obiskobilob rounds of the top 5 with 23.

Check out the newly updated headquarters here.

Hoorah! But just watch me clutch defeat from the jaws of victory at the last minute.

Thanks for the huge response of ideas everyone - I will be implementing many of them in the next pool.

As for the entry process, I will request that all DLers registering do so through the Private Messaging system here at the DL, ensuring privacy for all teams.

Entries coming from Wikipedia viewers &/or other sources will submit their picks via email - that way privacy will be protected, and I will have an email address so I can contact the team member should they score a hit or win the pool. I'm lucky that WSDA (who presumably found the pool on wikipedia) did not do well in the pool as I have no means of contacting him/her - this method will eliminate that problem.

Theme teams - I have been considering this concept ever since I saw Canadian Paul's pool. I am still unsure whether or not I will offer this - but if I would, the bonus would probably be 3 points - just enough to give a team an edge in the event of a tie.

I will be considering these items and more prior to the entry opening date of March 1st.

UPDATE:

The New Official Rules for WDP II

For a bit of a refresher - this is a wiki-deadpool. Your 10 celebs must all have valid wikipedia articles. No other restrictions except those mentioned below are in place.

DL MEMBERS - Submit your list of 10 celebs through the Private Messaging system. Include a substitute in case one decides to go early. If I can't get ahold of you in time, you might lose that slot if you didn't provide a substitute.

OTHER MEMBERS - Submit your list to wdp0708@gmail.com.

* :crossbone: All Entries Must be Received Prior to 00:01 UTC on April 1, 2006. :crossbone: *

:lol: NEW BONUSES:

Theme Teams - pick your 10 celebs so that they all have something in common(not too broad) and receive a bonus of 3 points if and when your first celebrity dies.

:skull: TIP: Make sure you note that you have created a theme team - I might not realize it!

Unique Picks - will now be awarded an extra point on their demise. (A unique pick is a pick that only you have picked.)

:unsure: NEW RULES:

One team per person! - (Pretty self-explanatory)

No Picks on Death Row - Since it would be easy to find 10 inmates on death row with wikipedia articles, no picks on death row are now allowed. (Thanks for the tip, CP!)

:old: SCORING:

Scoring is the same.

* Aged 1-30 Years - 10 Points

* Aged 31-55 Years - 9 Points

* Aged 56-70 Years - 8 Points

* Aged 71-85 Years - 7 Points

* Aged 85-122 Years - 6 Points

:pop: Remember: This pool's 12 month run spans into two different years. Ages will always be confusing - The ages posted on the site will be as of the pool's end. Points are given on the basis of how old the person was at their time of death, so don't sweat over what ages are posted on the site.

Enjoy WDP II, Registration begins March 1. Happy pick finding!

Just to make sure I'm crystal clear - you're only allowed one team of 10 people, but if those 10 people happen to have something in common, then bonus points may be involved, correct?

Weatherman, re the above:

What rules - if any - apply to qualifying as a celeb on this DP? Is news coverage - as in any news coverage - enough or do the celebs require certain obits, broadsheet UK or summat? Only, I think I could pack a team with ten who'd get obits in the Cumberland News, but I doubt it'd play well with the other entrants!

Bit of a strange question here, would conjoined twins count as one or two picks for the purpose of this deadpool?

If they're cojoined the they'll probably die at the same time so it should be one pick but then again that's two deaths so it could be two.

Right - some examples of theme teams could be "born in 1940" or "suffering from alzheimers", etc..

Theme teams can't be too broad either (born in USA) - so submit them early because I might have to ask you to narrow it down.

A good question indeed - I'm not sure what to say. Has any other pool addressed this issue? It is literally two deaths, but then again they are sort of a package deal (one goes, the other has to), so I will give some thought to this.

Ahh - it is a wiki-pool, as I like to call it, and the first of its kind. Picks must have a permanent article on wikipedia (meaning you can't create it only to have it deleted by admin later). That is the only requirement.

My goodness! "Born in 1940, suffering from Alzheimers" is a very specialised team indeed! (Unless they were putting something special in the water in 1940 ;) )

I don't know if that was sarcastic or not ;) , but those were 2 examples of possible theme teams.

Would a theme team "Born in the Netherlands" be too narrow, if that's possible? I don't think I could think of 10 Dutch born celebs who would both be likely to die in the period and get an obit.

My real question is: what's too wide?

Hein

I would permit "born in the Netherlands" - since it would be difficult to come up with such a list as you mentioned.

The general guideline for anyone considering a theme team: If you don't have to research and find people who fit your category, it is probably too broad.

The best way to see if it will be allowed is just to notify me of the type of team you are considering and I will either approve or disapprove.

Remember: Theme teams are just an option. It's probably a bad idea if you find yourself adding people who probably won't die to your theme team just so you have a full 10.

I can't cover all the possible teams, but here is a random list of types of theme teams I won't allow:

Born in USA

Born in UK

Suffering from CANCER - be more specific (stomach cancer, panceratic cancer) and I will allow it.

Aww...Don't feel so bad OoO! 15 other teams did the same thing.

On that topic, we now interrupt the discussion of the 07-08 pool with the news that Art Buchwald is now dead. He is the 14th hit for the WDP. Four teams selected Buchwald: RMHED, Canadian Paul, Obiskobilob, and Maryportfuncity. Those four teams receive four points each. This is the fifth hit for Canadian Paul, who now reclaims 1st place with 38 points, leaving Slave to the Grave in 2nd place with 37. Football Fan and Obiskobilov are now tied for 3rd place with 30 points.

So, congratulations to Canadian Paul as we now inch closer and closer to the end of the pool.

It has been a dead heat between CP and Slave to the Grave for almost the entire pool. Both teams have had 5 hits and have 5 selections left.

CP has Ariel Sharon, Saad Al Sabah, Gabriel Marquez, Windsor Davies, and Deborah Kerr left.

SttG has Bobby Bland, Tammy Faye, Billy Graham, Ariel Sharon, and Larry Hagman.

Both teams have some picks that are in failing health, but my prediction for the winner is for SttG to reclaim 1st place with the death of Tammy Faye.
