Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

I just want to say that the whole Emily Thornbury things goes to show why I (and I imagine everyone else on here) is not in politics.

I am fairly certain if I had seen that tweet I would have gleefully retweeted it.

Is it sneering to expect your electorate to behave rationally and be disappointed when they don't?

How have they (UKIP) convinced people that real change is acheived by voting in the same bloke in a different colour hat from a party led by a millionaire banker?

Lie down time I think.

Yeah, I don't get the outrage over the tweet thing at all. I mean, it was just a photo with a caption stating when and where, nothing sarcastic. I don't see anything contentious or offensive. I would guess from the photo that the occupants of the house were likely voting for UKIP, but so what?

Honestly, you knew what kind of labotomised West Ham supporter lived there before you even saw him.

He probably has a Staffie called Tyson which he takes to work with him.

Im no snob but, yeah, I do get it. The problem is we are full of false indignation.

Its bollocks really.

I could understand it if she'd said something like that :D but she didn't, did she.

What I do take exception to is her referring to "British flags". They're English flags, woman, jeez such ignorance.

UKIP are in essence a stalking horse for the far right wing of the Conservatives. They are serving a useful purpose, once that is done they will be discarded and the real people pulling the strings will emerge.

I'm voting UKIP, not because I like them but because I like interesting times.

Former mayor of the District of Columbia, Marion Barry, has died

http://news.yahoo.co...-074325246.html

Let's all light a joint up in his memory

Had no idea he smoked crack. I think I might start calling Rob Ford "Barry White" now.

He was caught on camera smoking crack with a prostitute, but managed to turn his life around and become mayor of Washington DC.

He was actually mayor of DC when he was caught , which was why it was such a big deal. He later served a second term.

Some of these went on to have ministerial careers such as Richard Caborn and other are already on the radar like Ian Paisley but assembling a DDP team from this lot would be a leap of faith as many will be tocuh and go for an Obit. However if you have spies in the local press then this could be a good source of information.

The 1979 elections were held on the First past the post principal with constituencys being roughly approximated to counties it is only in later elections that we get the regional approach and a move to the D'Hondt system.

Since I published this list Paisley has died and now Frederick Catherwood has gone.

This fall has seen the deaths of a number of former U.S. Mayors. One prominent one you guys missed was the death of Jane Byrne, former Mayor of Chicago (1979-1983) on November 14th. She was Chicago's only woman mayor and Chicago is also the largest U.S. city to have had a woman mayor. Some called her Chicago's Iron Lady (referencing the fact she became Chicago Mayor the same year Maggie Thatcher became UK Prime Minister).

Increases Ronald Atkins obit chances, as the two time no-name Preston Labour backbencher is now the oldest living MP.

Second oldest is Denis Healey, somewhat better known.

Very nearly put him on my DDP but didn`t as I had two theme teams of nonagenarians and centenarians and he would be 99 at the beginning of the year and 100 a month later and I preferred not to put him in my regular team as I had filled that up with youngsters.Smart move on my part.He was the last MP elected in 1945.

Last MP elected in the 1945, 1950 and 1951 Parliaments.

Three oldest surviving MPs are now: Ronald Atkins (Labour, b. 1916), Lord Denis Healey (Labour, b. 1917) and Sir Albert McQuarrie (Conservative, b. 1918).

From the 1955 Parliament, there are 8 individuals still living:

Sir Richard Body (b. 1927) Conservative

Sir Robin Chichester-Clark (b. 1928) Ulster Unionist Party

Lord John Eden (b. 1925) Conservative

Lord Denis Healey (b. 1917) Labour

Lord Robert Lindsay (b. 1927) Conservative

Lord Roy Mason (b. 1924) Labour

Tom Mitchell (b. 1931) Sinn Féin

James Ramsden (b. 1923) Conservative

Survivors for later Parliaments:

1959: 19 / 629

1964: 49 / 630

1966: 83 / 630

And then too many to count from the latter ones...

Sir Albert McQuarrie is still alive? I'll have to stick him on one of my lists as he was the last Conservative MP for my constituency before Alex Salmond took it from him in 1987.
