Pope Benedict XVI

Recommended Posts

I'd been wondering about that. When he loses his "head of state" diplomatic immunity it would just take one country to issue an international warrant for his arrest to trap him permanently in the Vatican.

Read the first two articles on the above link.

Then grab a big tub of popcorn, this is going to get very interesting.

I'm thinking of applying for the job, but I can't find any information about salary and annual leave entitlements. Can anyone help? I do have GCSEs in English and Maths.

How's your Latin?

Would certainly be more accommodating than the Ecuadorean Embassy

actually I'm rather surprised that he has resigned just before Easter which I had always thought was the most important time in a Catholic priests calender..next to junior school fresher week that is.

"A potentially explosive report has linked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI to the discovery of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican, some of whom – the report said – were being blackmailed by outsiders.

The pope's spokesman declined to confirm or deny the report, which was carried by the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica.

The paper said the pope had taken the decision on 17 December that he was going to resign – the day he received a dossier compiled by three cardinals delegated to look into the so-called "Vatileaks" affair.

Last May Pope Benedict's butler, Paolo Gabriele, was arrested and charged with having stolen and leaked papal correspondence that depicted the Vatican as a seething hotbed of intrigue and infighting.

According to La Repubblica, the dossier comprising "two volumes of almost 300 pages – bound in red" had been consigned to a safe in the papal apartments and would be delivered to the pope's successor upon his election.

The newspaper said the cardinals described a number of factions, including one whose members were "united by sexual orientation".

In an apparent quotation from the report, La Repubblica said some Vatican officials had been subject to "external influence" from laymen with whom they had links of a "worldly nature". The paper said this was a clear reference to blackmail..."

Lucky day for any potential assassins out there:

"When his resignation takes effect at 8 p.m. Rome time Thursday, Lombardi said, the Swiss Guards will no longer protect the pontiff, as they are charged with guarding only the pope."

I'm sure he will make a quick getaway in his bullet proof pope mobile. Or is that getting repossessed too ?

Missed this one before but a few sites are reporting that Mafia boss Enrico de Pedis paid a billion lira in bribes to be buried amongst the popes in 1990:

Update: it seems the church he was buried in was given over to Opus Dei in that same year. Turns out Dan Brown's imagination was a bit tame compared to what was happening in the real world.

Cardinal Pell turns against the Pope! Rat fleeing the sinking ship, methinks....

Pell also notes that "his [the Pope's] weakness and sickness [were] only too evident today..."

Ah well, we'll soon have another one.

One year we could very well have two popes on the DeathList at once.

Sure it won't be two on next year. I'm sure the new pope is going to be quite a bit younger than Ben' XVI. Anyway I thought he looked fairly well. As of this now I still can't see him on a 25 name list of mine. Next years 50 name list more than likely, but then only to cover a base position.

So its the pope's last day and I just imagine him leaving the Vatican and they stop him on the way out and ask for his gold cross and funny hat . He hands them over and their like ''and your other cross'' he has tucked in his socks. He also has this overly large trench coat on and as he is leaving it just explodes with catholic paraphernalia. Gold candle sticks , goblets and a oil painting of Mary Magdalene everywhere. He can always claim the devil made him do it so its all good.

This is from a few weeks ago but according to the hack journalist/hardline Catholic Damian Thompson, "Pope Benedict XVI… sorry, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI... [is]... looking MUCH better than he was six months ago, and I regret posting the (well-sourced) Vatican gossip suggesting that he was at death's door. I'm so glad I was wrong and I shouldn't have published it." <_<
